CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS

I made a quic thread here so that it dosent get messy and confusing with everyone uploading suggestions on separate threads...so please use this thread to upload suggestions...that way we can keep them all togheder and we can decide on them..

when suggesting something suggest it with the exact audio of the falseta you are thinking off and specifie the level you are nominating it for....please be specific so theres no guessing required on our behalf

lets try ..3 different classes: beginner, intermediate and advanced people nominate themselfs the class they wish to participate in....we can come up with the requirements after we pick the falsetas

RE: CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS (in reply to Florian

just had a good idea !! ..(I thing...maybe )

the winner from each month from each level as part of the reward picks the challenge for the next month for the level he won.

that way we dont have to spend too long arguing about what ones to use and its fair because hes earned the right to tell everyone what to play..

its only the first one we pick democratically ...after that if you wanna pick the challenges, win the challenges..

Maybe its a good idea...i dont know...adds to the Enticement ?

I know we have pretty good players here in the foro. It willdefinetely be a good challenge to win a month. But who decide? And how to decide? And one month isnt much time to practice, no? And you know one is better in arpegios and has a weakness in picado and vise versa. But both could be at the same level... It will be hard to find a piece which would be balanced for both of them.

thats true Doit but if we all put our heads togheder and are also all willing to give a litlle i am sure we can come to somewhere in the midlle...something thats as fair as possible for everyone..

it is possible that this wont be 1000% fair for everyone but we are learning from the first one.

besides if there is an aspect of a players playing is weaker eg. arpegio...this is the perfect enticement to work on that...at the end of it thats the idea of the challenge, that we push ourselfs a litlle ...wining is just fun....everyone that takes part wins really

we can come up with something and we can also come up with the criteria ourselfs and make it as fair as we can..i am sure between all of us we can do that

if others prefer that we all always pick the pieces instead of the winner...thats fine with me too, majority rules...i just put it out there

Make 2 or 3 people the vote counters.

People rate each entry based on several criteria.
e.g.
Technical skill
Feeling/duende
Creativity (maybe fore advanced level)

People give a score fore each criteria out of 10, that sums up to a total score and PM their votes to the counters (you can send PM to multiple recipients. These volunteers tally them up, and post overall scores (with breakdowns) in the results thread.

This way, we can have winners based on sum scores, but also honorable mentions for technical, duende &c...

If you work out more criteria, it can also be used to help focus for future practice.

Contestants can ask for their results to be PMed instead of publicly posted. Unless they are the winner. If you're the winner, you have to bare all.

I like that !
I am kind of in a favour of some kind of poll for each class where everyone can still vote anonimusly but we can all be part of it... and see it as it develops...part of the fun...feels more like we are part of the process...( like Eurovision ...the voting is just as much part of the fun)

u know ...we do all this , we dont want the fun to stop when it comes to the scoring...we set a deadline for the votes

everyone has to keep an open mind and take it with a pinch of salt, it is just fun, if you have learned a new falseta because of it you have allready won..

RE: CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS Intermediate (in reply to Florian

This is one of my Intermediate nomination..(the whole audio..including the compas of rithm at the end)

its good because the techinallity its not supperdificult but the difficult part is capturing the aire..there is so much more to it then just the technicallity of it..and its fun and practicle...its the kind u can do at any party..gig etc..one could always use more buleria falsetas/ intros...if we can make this challenge fun as well as practicle even better

i can provide loop and tab for it ( make sure you or we have acces to the tab for your nomination)

what do you guys think ? is it resonable while still a challenge ? its a pretty good even spread of different techniques...

RE: CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS (in reply to Florian

OK, here are my suggestions

First, I think we agree already at least for this challenge that advanced players sit out and run the thing. Next, we need I think at least three advanced players to volunteer be judges and run the show. I suggest Flo, Ricardo, ToddK, or others to step up. Ron can maybe help here? So we need to run a thread getting these advanced volunteers - perhaps Flo can do that?

Then you three or more guys decide on challenge classes (I suggest beginner and intermediate). Next, you three guys determine if there are going to be any contestants, by I suggest putting up a beginner thread and an intermediate thread requesting contestants. (PS I will contest the intermediate challenge, but I reserve the right to downgrade to beginner if it is too tough - so you have one so far).

If there is sufficient interest for a challenge, then use guys decide the piece and provide a separate video upload and tab for beginners and intermediates to study. I suggest two or three months to deadline the challenge uploads.

PS if you three guys want to change the judging or anything, you decide...

This has to be run like a dictatorship or it will fall apart. I nominate Flo, Ricardo and ToddK to run the dictatorship with Ron the headmaster.

RE: CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS (in reply to cathulu

thank you I am flatered ...i am happy to do whatever

but i think everyone should get a vote..get as many people involved and as many different tastes involved as possible....if not taking the challenge atleast voting ? or atleast more than 3..maybe 5 to 8 judges..

so if you agree nominate about 5 to 10 members in case some are busy and dont have the time

its true we have to at some point run a dicatorship but thats just to get this off the ground and more in the organising not necesarely in the final voting..i dont know..

i am happy to judge, i am happy to sitt it out, i am just as happy to just organise and let others judge ...whatever

but i guess first is first , finiding and agreeing on suitable challenges...

good i am glad to hear it ...yes its enough there for it to be a challenge and practical and useful and fun to judge..

not to mention it covers a variety of techinques with the emphasis on feel and pulse

RE: CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS Beginer (in reply to Florian

this is a possible Beginner Challenge..its stil buleria but the focus is on basic compas and rasqueado...i need some members that consider themselfs beginners too help me out here...is this too hard ? too eazy ?

hard enough for it to be a challenge whilst still doable ?...too eazy ? i know the chords and notes are eazy but the challenge lies in the rasqueado, compas, feel etc...to me this is the base of all bulerias...if you can do this well and understand this well you are half way to your buleria...the falsetas will be way way eazyer to play in the future..and make more sence of them ..

let me know..i have the tab and can also provide a loop for it if you wish to do it with a loop ( i suggest you do...makes it eazyer for you to determine if you are in or out of compas)

also i can provide allready slowed down mp3 versions incase you dont have slow down software..

I encourage any member "New" to flamenco to take part...it will also encourage others to join in ...it will inspire etc...

so anyway let me know what you guys think...again i tried to pick something that is a litlle challenging, fun, while at the same time practicle and usefull to you in a future...this is a great great starting point for a buleria imo

RE: CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS Beginer (in reply to Florian

Florian,

I consider my self a beginner, and I only just got this sort of basic bulerias compas under my belt a month or two ago. This is all pretty much the same stuff/same tempo that I’ve been working on, but it sounds nothing like this when I play it! So, yeah, the specific swing/feel, and the timing of the rasgeos, that’s definitely the hard part. So, to answer your questions, too hard/too easy, I’d say that this is “easy” to play, but playing it well is another story. It’s a challenge for me, at least.

And I’d be thrilled with a tab of this and a loop to work with. I’ve been just kinda plugging away at the same bulerias stuff for the past several weeks, so having something that’s very close to what I’ve been working on but is in a slightly different direction would be refreshing.

Thanks,

Adam

excellent ...I am relived to see that you agree, and find the usefullnes in it was kind of a stab in the dark...with this under your belt your buleria rithm is 90% taken care of....and to me this is the most important, basic formula to any good buleria i cant say enough of how much good stuff like this will do for someones buleria

well regardless on if the rest vote this as the challenge or not il give you the tab..

but incase this gets picked we'l wait until then so that noone gets too much of a headstart on it ...

RE: CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS Beginer (in reply to Florian

Yeah, that’s definitely what I’d call “blueprint” bulerias. Aside from getting the feel right, I’ve found that (for myself, at least) the real trick to bulerias is getting a solid feel for where you are in the compas at any given time; not just blindly following some tabs and hoping that you get from point A to Point B in the right place at the right time, but REALLY knowing where the 3, and the 6, and the 9, the 10, the 12, and everything in between is, and how it feels. This applies to all the other stuff, of course, but it seems to be absolutely essential for bulerias and a lot tougher as well (again, for me, at least). It’s only as this sort of understanding has started falling into place that bulerias has started working out for me. Not quite there yet, but….

Anyway, I think that bulerias you uploaded is particularly useful in that it has a good amount of space in it. Not a relentlessly driving, “busy” bulerias, but something with a lotta swing, lotta space and something that makes for a good exercise in feeling your away around the compas…..

RE: CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS Beginer (in reply to srshea

Hi all,

I consider myself a beginner and I'd be willing to join in.

I think that it's very difficult to get rules, judging etc fair and so that everyone agrees, but we could do a trial run with agreement that if the rules didn't work out we could adapt them for next time.

The clip that Flo uploaded is absolutely fine, and just would be good for anyone to have as part of their standard bulerias anyway. Or would it work for the challenge to just be, say 30 seconds of bulerias compas and rasgueado? Rather than specifying a particular arrangement?

Anyway count me in.

I like the 2 falsetas you picked. I think you got the technique levels right. The beginners one is not hard but getting it to sound as good as the recording will be a challenge. The Moraito is intermediate and useful for everyone no matter what level.
Norman made the suggestion of Sanlúcar's zapateado, "Los Caireles" on Recital Flamenco as a more advanced study which I thought was good.

quote:

Yes thats really important, and some players will be busy with gigs etc.....and don't forget that we are all in different time zones as well so it would be a good idea to have uploads by a certain date and winner announced a few days later.

Secondly, the judges can upload but CANT compete. This will avoid the same members winning every month.

This looks like fun

I think i might be able to play the intermediate falseta, but only
half speed.
I might be more wise to just try the beginner falseta

... or do you want a special challenge for handicapped players ? "Strum a buleria compas"?

Flo, buleriando seems good choice to me. Picado and Rasg will be a challenge for me.

I think participants should judge each other. Everybody give his other participants (in that group) a vote (not anonymous). That way you have to be honest in your judgement to the other, coz you are getting judged too by them. In addition to that we could still have expert judges who judge all groups and maybe give some advice here and there. We can make 50/50, so that the judgement from the participants and experts are equal in weight.

And judgements should contain a text, not just a click or points. Otherwise it wont be very informative and will become more something like "charts", ie not about quality but quantity of sales or popularity.

i think scoring should be based on a scale from 1-5 to be as objective and straight forward as we can. additional commentary should be encouraged as well as deniz has pointed out. i think that would be the best of both worlds.

also, there's a lot of us here and thus a lot of different recording techniques and capabilities. we should level the playing field by not messing with reverb or adding anything fancy.

lastly, i'd like for the advanced players to participate as well. it will be nice to hear them play. we can learn from them. the beginners and intermediates could be the ones to judge them. so it'd sort of be like a role reversal.

RE: CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS (in reply to XXX

greate its good to see that u guys are ok with the challenge so far....the quicker we can get this logistics out of the way the faster we can move on to the fun parts..

I am sorry if i seem a litlle pushy lol I hope I dont seem too dismisive of others ideas. without atleast fair explonation...its from good intentions...u guys know what happens everytime we discuss this things too much lol..we kill the momentum
the most important thing is that we do it...if anyone has any suggestions thats cool but make sure its worded out exactly and clear to understand, detailed, doable and simple....if someone has a greate idea, brilliant i am more then happy to follow it but please be specific and think detail.....

i was reminded today that the workshop with the woman from spain is starting next week, so myself have to stay on guajira and cantinas ( was starting to get bored of guajiras lol) but i am more then happy to help get organised, provide whatever u need and vote if you want it..

Deniz your idea is good but personally i dont think participants should judge atleast not in the same class they compete in..its a conflict of interest...its not that i dont trust your fairness is just not really done...it could become about oh....he was kind to me so il be generous with him..or the oposite etc..

or imagine this theres only 7 point difference between you winning and Joe wining...everyone has cast theyr votes...and u are leading by 7 points..the only vote left to be casted is yours....will you not be tempted to give Joe a 6 ? lol ...I am human i might

i just dont wanna put you guys in that situation...plus we should keep it as simple as possible..

we either make it everyone who dosent compete votes or about 8, 10, 15 whatever amount of judges you guys wish to nominate..

its just too complicated other ways isnt it ?

and someone suggested a great way to vote..I was thinking about it and it makes sence..to me.if you wanna vote the guy u are voting on deserves to atleast see you do it to his face..just to avoid any **** or anyone using this as an excuse to bash someone...

however keep in mind that judges will be judges, they will not be doing anyone any favours this time, they will vote according to them....its important that each person that judges is as honest as posible to theyr opinion

instead of anonymus...each person voting will mark from 1 to 10 with 10 beeing the highest for 3 or 4 criterias we agree on..example.

Deniz

technique 10
compas 9
aire 10

total 29

there is a possibility there might be 2 winners ...nothing wrong with that..or we can think of making the criteria more detiled to reduce the chances of a draw...eg. mark techniques individualy

rasqueado 7
arpegio 9
picado 10
rithm 10
timing 10
aire 10

total 56

its harder to get identical overall scores

so what do you think ?

Can we start voting on the judging ?

either nominate as many members as you like to vote ( and use names)...or we all agree that everyone that dosent participate can vote...its up to those of you who are taking part in the challenge..

depending who wants to take part in the challenge or voting

I nominate people like Ron, Todkk, Grisha, Ricardo, JasonM, Sean, Pimientito, Norman K, John O, Doit, Kate, Anders etc......i cant take it cause I have to practice diferent things so id like to vote if you will have me..whomever wants to vote or take the challenge should speak up..u cant do both...so Todkk, you might have to just pick one...but whomever wants to take the challenge by all means take it...dont setlle for judging...i am defenetly in the next one...

whomever votes you want a broad selection that covers many different opinions and tastes, i nominated judges who see it from different angles too...wich will make it interesting and wide open..

well the recording quality will not be one of the criterias..so even if they have nice reverb they cant score higher then you..

but i dont know ...if the other competitors agree ...sure

or maybe u can do that for beginners in case the intermediates guys want to make it sound as good as possible and have a litlle more experience with recording ?

u guys decide..

well thats up to anyone that wishes to join in..anyone can..( if intermediates are ok with it) this is a trial run..if we can make it work for the next batch of chalenges there will be an advanced class..so

or we can add an advanced challenge class if theres strong sentiment about it from them...but someone needs to be left over to judge lol

RE: CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS (in reply to Florian

i just think that perception might be skewed a bit based on recording quality. but i'm ok with whatever. i just want this thing to get started so i can get those tabs!

i like the idea of judging based on technique, compas, and aire. creativity for the advanced level if that happens.

i think numbers should be from 1 - 5 rather than 1 - 10. reason being that it might be difficult to discern, say a 6 from a 7. there's not a big difference. one person might win over another person by just a few points because a judge might get stuck between two numbers. however, on a scale from 1 - 5 the difference between a 4 and 5 is easily or more distinguishable. im just being picky here.

im sort of new here so i don't really know who the advanced players are but everyone you picked sounds good if we can get them all to participate.

thats true but also allows judges more room to play with ...less chances of a draw...noone is probably going to give a 1 or a 2...the chances of a draw are way way more likely then if u marked from 1 to 10

also allows judges to be a litlle more detailed in the assesment..
otherwise all they have is

bad, not good, midlle of the road, not bad and perfect

there are many options in between...u wanna get as accurate assemsent of your playing as possible

but again if majority of you guys taking the challenge want 1 to 5 i am cool with it

I don't have a good recording set up so good if that it not one of the criteria

And I don't really mind about the scoring much because I'm not very competitive - just want to join in and learn more stuff. Let's just try a system and see how it goes.

I don't notice loads of people volunteering to be judges.......

RE: CHALLENGE SUGGETIONS (in reply to Florian

Ok lets try and push it along a litlle i am excited and just want it to start asap....

SO far we have 2 Challenges for Intermediate and Beginners so far theres seems to be agreement on it ...So can we lock it in ? if anyone has other challenge suggestions speak now...and do it with the audio

Can we move along to Who and how we judge it ?
I nominated that those involved cannot vote in theyr class..

We can either do a everybody not involved votes or a handfull of different nominated members with different tastes judge..
(If you want the nominated members to vote) use names ..those nominated have to make it clear to us if they accept and wish to vote or would rather take part in the challenge or sit it out...If you havent been nominated but would like to Vote speak up..

The Criteria.
Score 1 to 10 with 10 the highest...judjing will be on this challenges will be on
Technique/Clarity, execution
Timing/Compas ( yes its true the aire cannot be that greate if the compas is out but we need atleast 3 different criterias to judge on as to avoid having 5 people with the same score, besides one could have good compas yet still be missing the phrasing, dynamics, aire..
Aire/Swing

So its just 3 litlle things to finalize and we can move on..either agree or give a detailed suggestion of another way of doing any of those 3 things..please be willing to meet in the midlle and accept that no matter how we do it theres a good chance not everyone will agree....at some point we have to be a dictatorship if we wanna get this thing off the ground..

Flo,
Good work man!

OK, I think I could give pretty fair judgement generally ( ) and I think ToddK would be good on technical nitpicking( ), Ricardo on all aspects of course ( ) and Anders 'cos he's interested in tone and aire.

And of course all the others you mentioned..

Grisha and Jason don't really post very frequently, so it depends if they have the time to get involved?
Henrik too...he's not on much these days.

So anyway, what I'm saying is I'll volunteer if that's acceptable with everybody.

cheers,

Ron

Brill Ron! I think you will be very fair and encouraging as a judge. Just need some other guys to agree to judge as well.

Yes thats exactly what i was thinking...a wide panel of judges who look for different things..and come from different sides of it.. between 7 and 15 depending on the interest..its good to have the technical nitpicking and blance it out with the guy who holds tone and aire above..mix it all up...make it interesting ...see what we get

Sean and Norman ofcourse very involved in Cante so personally i am very interested to see how they score it...Id love Kates opinion...( if shes willing)

make it as wide as possible..and whomever judges needs to be stuborn to theyr own tastes and opinion...we dont want anyone to be influenced by how the other judge scored

Yes i realize about Grisha and Jason but Grisha was here just the other day and said he still looks in and looked interested...anyway its up to them...if they wanna be involved I nominated them..

And ofcourse id love Henrik to judge too but he didnt have a computer last time i chatted to him, comes in every now and than

Id like to judge too..are we allowed to nominate ourselfs ? but ofcourse the most important thing is that we get as many members as possible taking the challenge...thats the fun part.

I'll nominate you to be a judge Flo. This is all your idea, so we don't want to exclude you anyway!
