How about this then:

ANYONE seeing a post which offends THEM (ie directed PERSONALLY to THEM and NOT a FRIEND or anything) should report it to me and Henry.

(Do NOT bother Simon he has stuff to do other that sort out petty squabbling.)

DO NOT REPLY TO THE POST. This is where the trouble starts

One of us will deal with it and contact both parties concerned.

DON'T ANYONE ELSE REPLY TO IT. This is important.

Anyone else replying to it will be just as guilty of causing trouble as the original poster.

cheers,

its all you had to say, thats fair

i accept that

cheers

Pgh,

Threadlocking is a good tool, but it has a tendency to let personal issues go unresolved and go underground to fester and grow.

But yeah, when a general issue is just turning into nonsese etc.

cheers,

Ron

OK someone has to ask the stupid questions and it may as well be me

How do I know if a post has offended someone and they've reported it to you so that you can deal with it? The offence is not always that obvious - it can be oblique, not direct.

Well sorry to be dim. Other than that I think that's all perfect.

Pgh I think the Loctite should be issued to all admin

OK then, good.

Now it will only work as a GENERAL FORUM RULE (ie for EVERYONE...not just Flo & Todd).

Contact both me and Henry DIRECTLY....DO NOT click on the REPORT ABUSE link on the post as this goes to Simon as well. Leave the guy in peace.

Use REPORT ABUSE for VERY SERIOUS issues only.

Henry is completely independent of me and is an EQUAL Administrator (ie I am not senior or anything), so this will lessen the argument of one person favoring someone over another on the Forum.
He is a different generation to me and has different views.

If the said post is found to be offensive it will be deleted and the poster issued a warning.

If you are unsatisfied and feel we have been unjust then contact Simon directly.

cheers,

Ron

Hi Ailsa,

What I mean is don't "stand up" for a friend ...ie..

A: I think you are crap and you know where to put your opinions (directed to B)

C: I think B is ace and YOU are the one who is crap. Get a life!
D: I agree with C....you STINK!

A: I think you are ALL crap.

E: You are a F' ing idiot...I know D personally and D is great.

C then complains to Admin...

You see how it develops?

cheers,

Ron

just to clarify, i meant "you" in the plural sense, as in all members.

I wasnt offended, i understood you. That was exactly my point, namely not to take all member into charge. But its ok now anyway (hopefully).

All very good and well, but what specifically did I do to earn a negative score?

I wanted to defend the rating system, I think it's appropriate that a newcomer should see a reply by, say Ricardo and see a high score or a post by a trouble maker and see a low score.

All I've done was tell people to stop arguing or stop attacking other people. Wow. Whatever.

So now, I agree with whoever it was that said we should disable the ratings. It can clearly be done, as ratings don't work in Luthier or or OT.

Scores should be reset to zero, and people like Ricardo should all get custom titles (as opposed to "fellow") to reflect on the fact that they are people worht listening to.

P.D.
I'm just using Ricardo as an example, especially as he has an obscenely high score. I'm not nominating him for mayor or VP or asking him out on a date...

It's a pity that people feel the need to bother Simon with their feelings about stuff written on the forum. I don't want anyone banned, even the jerks. Who are the jerks? Well, I suspect everyone's list will be a bit different. I'm sure I've annoyed a few members, and I've been annoyed by some. I've never thought it neccessary to complain.

I've never felt this list would be wonderful if only so and so were banned. This is flamenco-nobody knows it all. Nothing written or read here will ever have a significant impact on the real world of flamenco IMO. It's nice to have a place where we all can share our interest in an obscure art form. How about a bit of tolerance for the diverse charactors who make up the forum. Block 'em, don't ban 'em.

Dont take this score thing too seriously.
Those of us who are long enough here (which are 90%), know that (with few exceptions) the score doesnt say anything about the person behind that score. I mean Anders for instance should have more than 4 and i should have less than 40. In fact few weeks ago i had only 26 and now all of a sudden i have 40 without contributing anything special like a tab or upload something or answering a difficult question or anything special to the foro (however, thanks, dont take them away please ).

Yes, and i cant give Pimientito some scores for the Taranta Tab he uploaded just a few minutes ago, because scoring is dissabled in the tab section.

So, you see guys that scores have nothing to say. Relax

IMO the green button is a really bad idea. Its against the the basic idea of a discussion forum. If you ignore, you are not willing to discuss, not willing to communicate. Beside of jokes, anybody contributes at a given time point with good thoughts or whatever.
Just think about how politics would work with this button.

They have red buttons instead.
One press of the button and the opponent goes up in smoke.
Unfortunately, there is no such a button in the foro

That is too bad, because he deserves points for such a substantive contribution.

People get points often times for posting comments that have nothing to do with Flamenco. I have noticed that most of the time Ricardo earned points for his knowledge of Flamenco and music so his score represents the valuable insights he's shared about Flamenco with Foro members.

I've got scored (er, does that sound wrong?)... so I'm not negative any more, and I'm a "fellow" again.

Thanks guys... To quote Sally Fields, "you really do like me!"

Screwing with the scores also screws with the title feature, in case anyone didn't know. So you can't move up from "aficionado" if you have a negative score... Someone just pointed that out to me recently...

Try to see the good side of fights, threadlocks, etc.

Usually after silence there will be a storm. But after that... silence. And when a fight has been discussed and all is spoken out... there will be more harmony. So, in the end... its good for the foro.

RE: The Forum (in reply to Exitao

The forum is running on custom modified off-the-shelf software.
A lot of it is at script level and not simply "tick the box" options like the programs we have running on our PCs.

As every programmer knows, sometimes these "minor" changes can have repercussions elsewhere causing glitches and hang-ups and odd operation and end up being a gread deal more work than originally thought.

Neither Henry nor myself are software engineers, and at this moment in time, I am not going to be the one to ask Simon.

OK, if everybody is happy with trying the new system for a while, I'll recap....

Only two simple rules to remember.

1: If during an exchange, you feel that someone is being personally abusive towards you, don't reply in anger but contact me and Henry directly by PM.
Don't use the "Report Abuse" button.

2: Don't intervene and dish out "justice" in angry language on someone elses behalf. It doesn't help and can lead to a flame war.

"Personal abuse" means just that. .. things like insults, intimidation, belittling, foul language directed to be hurtful etc etc NOT someone saying he thinks your favourite artist is crap, or your favourite CD or TV program.
Maybe not the best example, but you know what I mean here.

My aim is to keep the Forum as lively and dynamic as usual, with it's heated debates, jokes and banter, but without anybody getting personally hurt.

Obviously use common sense.
I mean if after an hour or so of cooling down, somebody wants to get back on the Forum and fully retract a statement and offer a sincere apology explaining that they were a bit grumpy and riled and went over the score...
Then that is to be welcomed IMO.

However if folk want to find ways "around" the system then we'll just be back to square one.

cheers,

Ron

RE: The Forum (in reply to Florian

I don't have a scroll-wheel so I always use the middle button scroll. You know, the circular gizmo that pops up and makes the page scroll at a tempo you set by moving the mouse up or down.

Anyway, two times this has made me accidentally middle-click on the report abuse button. All I got was an error message so I didn't think it made any sort of report. I hope I haven't caused stuff to be auto-generated and sent to Simon.
