hi! k first i have this book keys to flamenco, and thefirst rasquedo is a five stroke one for some reason, and i cant seem to be able to get the same rythm thats on the acompanying cd, it sounds as if there r double strokes, even though there arnt, as i realised from the slow motion clip. how do i get it even? i realise that will probly be an easy thing to answer in writing but the next thing will be - were can i get good online lessons, videos, there r so many out there - which should i try?

are you drunk again ron? hi nigsy, rasqueado takes quite while to build up the speed properly. dont expect them to sound like a cd in a couple of weeks, the main thing is to do them evenly. Dont rush them and try do them too fast too early, because they wont be even and they wont sound good. and welcome to the foro, you will find plenty of resourses here to help you on your way.

Hey, Nigsy.
Those five-stroke rasgeados are definitely tricky, and they do take a lot of practice to get right. For me the problem stems from the fact that it’s difficult to get, say two five-strokes rasgeados and one down-up stroke over three beats of a solea compas (as found in Keys to Flamenco) to fit in in a rhythmically balanced, even way. The easiest solution for now would be to replace the five-stroke rasgeados with four-stroke (amii). So, you’d be doing two four-stroke rasgeados and one down-up stroke in that little bit of solea. For me it’s MUCH easier to fit that in rhythmically.
As for getting the five-strokes right, I think you just gotta practice ‘em a million times, over and over. The one piece of advice I’d offer is that you definitely shouldn’t just try to mimic what you hear on the cd at full speed. I tried this and in the end I was basically just faking it. Slow way down, use the metronome, and work on getting each five-stroke rasgeado to fit evenly into a single beat, and only start speeding up once you feel like you have full control over each and every stroke.

Exactly. So many top professionals never do five stroke. Go ahead with four stroke and if you one days in the future think you need to play five stroke, learn them then.

odd, i've come to love the five strokers, it helps to break the evenness of amii which can be beautiful, but especially when you play for dancers or singers it can be refreshing not to hear the expected four notes but five (from my point of view, the listener might just want to turn me off :))
plus when you play seguiriya it comes really handy to be able to play the fivers, you should be able to hear why...

Nah Dom, I was just trying to keep up with the times and trying to learn SeofLundin KewlSpeek. Obviously, being from Scotland, I have a problem with the accent, but Ewan McGregor and David Tennant have made a decently fair go of it.
The main problem I have is with the posture and gesturing, which perhaps Stu (Manzman) could help me with, since he's involved in the acting business in London and must observe this daily.
Stu....I can get the relaxed but aggressive stance, but the problem I'm having is with co-ordination between maintaining those random upper torso jerks and minor convulsions and speaking at the same time. I also see that the "street professionals" keep their right arm about shoulder height but relaxed, with the hand either making "slicing" gestures or "jabbing" with the middle finger extended specifically when underlining a point. Is this correct?

I like ‘em both. Each has its own sound and feel, and its own place where it fits in best. On the whole I actually prefer the fuller, more flowing sound of the five-stroke, but the four-stroke is, at least for me (and I suppose for most beginners), so much easier to fit into more situations. I like to work on both and mix ‘em up as I go, using the five when I can, and defaulting to the four when necessary.

ROmerito once posted a really cool video of several rasguiados including the 5 finger one. I can't search it though. He was demonstrating a Vicente falsetta. I have not seen him around for awhile.
