Essential Flamenco Recordings

I've been taking Flamenco lessons for a little over a year now, I'm progressing nicely but I think one thing I really need to do to keep moving forward is spend some more time listening to quality flamenco.

There are so many artists and so many different recordings it's hard to know where to start and what to purchase.

Can you list some of your favorite Flamenco records and maybe mention why they are so good to help with my search?

Thanks!

You´re right. The Jungle is inmense.

I will recommend that you listen to cante with a good guitarist. My advice, from Jerez. Why, because its the most lively and traditional flamenco at the same time. More or less everything is in some kind of connection with this style.

So just a few ones:

Tio Gregorio el Borrico (with Paco Cepero. very typical jerez)

La Perla de Cadiz (With Manuel Morao. Fantastic recording)

Both of these are relatively cheap and long. They are from the serie "grandes cantaores"

or something with a never and maybe more pleasant sound (more studio) You could go for Miguel Poveda: "Viento del este"

For solo CD, start with Manolo Sanlucar: Tauromagia

Baile-Carmen Amaya
Cante- Paquera de Jerez, Terremoto de Jerez, Borrico de Jerez (as mentioned), Terremoto jr, Luis el Zambo (he is from Jerez ). Basically like Anders said, singers from Jerez are good. I also like Maria Vargas (she is from Sanlucar, but that is like 20 minutes from Jerez )

Camaron is good too. But older recordings I like better. My favorite cante resource is the video series RITO Y GEOGRAFIA DEL CANTE FLAMENCO. The new DVD's have subtitles in english. You can buy just one at first to start to get a taste for what it is all about.

Guitar-Ramon Montoya, complete recordings, Sabicas flamenco puro, Paco de lucia FANTASIA FLAMENCA, Fuente y Caudal, Siroco, M. Sanlucar TAUROMAGIA, Gerardo nuñez JUCAL, Vicente Amigo VIVENCIAS IMAGINADAS, Tomatito Paseo de los Castaños.

Ok, happy listening. Also go to YOUTUBE and search these names if you don't want to run out and blindly purchase CD's and videos. BUT I think it is important to start collecting stuff regardless.

Ricardo

Thanks for the input so far. I'm starting my list.

As a follow-up, where's the best place to purchase these online? I doubt my local record store will have very many of them.

I used to order a lot from http://www.flamenco-world.com/ until I couldn't justify any more money

www.deflamenco.com also has a good selection and the postage is not as steep as flamenco world.

Well actually pretty much all of those albums do have cante on them and that second to last one is all cante. And yes generally i do listen to albums from guitarists, i am after all a guitarist, and this is where i get my influences and ideas. What do you care anyway? The tone of your comment sounds quite judgmental....all you seem to think this foro is for, is proving how flamenco you think you are and selling your guitars. I think this foro is for anyone with an interest in flamenco weather it be cante, guitar or dance. I replied to a post asking about peoples ideas on some quality flamenco, the albums i listed off are albums i happen to love listing to. I wasnt trying to list off the anders cd shopping list. And next thing i know, your all over me like a randy little terrior on a bare leg

Far out Dominic. Why?????? I wrote: "Just to be curious" And it was meant to NOT be sounding judgemental. For ****** sake, I was curious. You can listen to whatever flamenco you like, its not going to change anything. Its not going to make me mad, sad, angry, depessive etc.

Ok, maybe it was to personal, of topic or whatever to ask you if you ever listen to cante. In this case I´m sorry, but I dont think it was so hash that it qualified for you to be judgemental, agressive, personal etc... Far out Dominic. Go somewhere else with your flame and anger.

Btw. I have some of the CD´s in your list, and I agree that they are nice. They are not essential to me, but thats just my taste and I respect your taste.

The question was phrased neutrally. While the written word lacks intonation &c the phrase "just out of curiosity" indicates a lack of agenda or judgement, more than it could imply an agenda or or judgement.

Think about it:

Just out of curiousity...?
Do you ever...?
Do you ever...?... because...

Of the 3, the first one is not only as neutral as the second, but it even posed more innocuously.

If you get like this over this kind of question, how would you react if I asked you if you had any sisters? I'm afraid to now. (BTW: if you do have any sisters, you should know I'm a very nice marriage-minded guy. ;-) )

Whoa. Simple misinterpretation there.
