laminated vs massive woods

Hi guys!

this might be a stupid question, but I'd like to know how a lay person like myself can distinguish between laminated and massive woods. I know you can take a look at the border of the soundhole to see if the grain of the wood goes through the whole top, but are there any other ways to distinguish this? I mean, if this is the only way, how can you tell if the back of the guitar is also massive or not?

Hi Nate

Its not a stupid question at all. It can be difficult to see if backs and sides are laminated or not.

Look at the wood grain. Look for some peculiar line or so, if solid wood, you should be able to see the on the inside as well.

tap it with your finger.

id you tap one made of solid wood, you'll know.

plus, look at the price tag.

try to flex it by pressing on it with your finger

The soundboard should always be solid, k no? The thickness is virtually veneer as it is at approx 3/16" (4mm? just guessing).

I thought that when it comes to factory-made you should just assume the sides are laminate unless it specifies otherwise.
