Which reminds me: in Saura’s Flamenco, Cañizares is playing in some weird tuning; I notice the camera carefully avoids showing the fingerboard.

Anyone know what it is?

I recall that it sounded as if the sixth string was tuned down too far for its own good, so it was probably the B major tuning introduced (as far as I know) by Nuñez, also in a siguiriya. (In which case the top string is D#; I don't remember the rest).

I think Gerardo's was just BADGBD#? But I don't remember for sure either.

In either case, if it's drop B it might not necessarily have the top D# - I know of at least one seguiriya with the low B and everything else standard and it sounds pretty damn good.

Is this in standard tuning and por medio or is there something weird going on?

He tunes both E strings to D - then uses standard por medio shapes when he plays standard seguiriya rhythm. Someone posted a video here years ago from a workshop where he explains his way of playing seguiriya - not sure if the video is still around.

The Cañizares one is dropped B, the other strings normal. One of my favorite siguiriyas ever.

Never heard it but I'm definitely interested; did he record it?

Morente was apparently working with Gerardo at that time. But because Nuñez had set up his curso in Sanlucar, and Manolo's brother was music director of the movie, they cut him out and set Morente up with Canizares. So Morente obviously wanted the same weird sounds Nuñez was delivering, but (sorry Canizares fans) his lame attempt to match it just by tuning down to B doesn't really do it for me. This is all based on gossip obviously, but as you can imagine there can be politics in flamenco too.
