A modern solea or a buleria technique, you mean i up - m down - i down - i up?
I do it all the time.
I use the a down instead of the m down and I also use it a lot. It has a very nice fast and bright sound and is a "normal" rasgueado used by a lot of players especially as fill-ins
Remember that in flamenco you can always change something you dont like or that feels awkward. I´m sure that Gerardo has lots of tecniques that many of us will not know how to play.
I think the part you mean is slower 8th notes right? Typically those extra down strokes come on the off beat with index repeating rather than middle finger. Gerardo is simply substituting his m finger for a repeated index. For example I play this for counts 9 through 12 of the compas (9e&ah, 10 & 11 & 12):
amii..(now the part) i down i down again, i up, m down i down with golpe. That is typical. I always thought that was what he was doing honestly, but I will check the vid again. The substitute the score is saying for the above is this: amii....i down m down i up, m down i down with golpe. It is not a big deal if you let i swing out along with m when it goes down after 10. They both come back up with i up.
In any case, that rhythmic phrase is SUPER common on those beats in Solxbul AND alegrias, and even bulerias sometimes, regardless of the finger combo you choose. Also beats 3-6 might use the same kind of phrase. The point of it is the DIRECTION of the strokes shift to give a synchopated drive to that part of the compas, pushing the rhythm forward.
I did notice a mistake in the score, a golpe after 12, but it should be ON 12. I will check the vid again.
OK checked the vid. Yeah he uses m finger where I said, BUT he flicks his whole wrist and really accents that m finger note each time (after 3 or 10), so it is not your normal rasgueado with just fingers moving. also he does not EXTEND the m finger when he does it, so it is like a "jab". I was right about the golpe though.
