I'll give it a try Jason but don't hold your breath. I've got a new webcam but it produces files which are truly enormous and the picture is awful. I've got a usb mic which I thought would be great but the output is really quiet.
Basically I am the worlds most pathetic sound engineer.
By the way thanks again for the fabulous tremolo you posted a few months ago. Really inspiring playing and a gem of a compostion.
I just reedited my post to include some of the other possibilities of twelve note patterns for other techniques. Here is another for picado that I have never seen anywhere else ( here the focus is on training the pinkie and other inactive fingers, bracketed fingers are played simultaneously ) i (eam)i m (ea)mim aeam. And it's morror image. e (ami) e a (mi) a e a mima. These are really good for relaxing the inactive fingers preventing the pinkie from atrophying in contraction and balancing the hand thus improving picado stamina and relaxation during long runs.

I will try and post something more intermediate next time. I do however encourage my students to learn and practice advanced material at slower tempos to build technique. Did you give it a try? You may surprise yourself.

P(up),A(down),I(down),P(down) for sixteenths is something i started using recently too.. (aw. i thought i was being original. ) It's nice one. to me it actually feels more relaxed/natural than PAI triplets, even though it's one more stroke.. go figure.
Thanks for another great lesson Jason! This goes into my bulerias practise plan, though a bit too advanced for me as of yet.

Wow lots of crazy new rasgueados in this thread. Sorry guys, I am sticking with my good ol "PIMP" rasgueados! Just kidding.
Seriously over the years of trying lots of different rasgueados, I have settled on a small mixed bag of favorites that are fun and do the job for me. One of my faves for triplets, just 2 beats ending on the 3rd, is ami, i(up)am, i.

PIMP rasgueados are my favs.
Ricardo, I think it is great to have a few tried and true rasgueados, but for purposes of study and building technique, thinking outside of the norm can yield some positive, sometimes phenominal results. In the end it really boils down to playing with soniquete. I have heard guys play completely wrong and still have soniquete. You play completely right and you have soniquete, so what rasgueado you use is really beside the point.
It is fun hanging out here with guitar players and aficionados, talking about different techniques, wild possibilites and sharing ideas. It is through these types of discussions that new things are born.

Great thread !! very interesting, not only the falsetas and videos but your views and tips, to me rithm and patterns is so fascinating more so than falsetas, whenever i listen to a players buleria is the rithm that grabs me or dosent, if i get past the rythm then i pay attention to the falseta if not, my attention dosent even make it as far as the falseta.
When playing a falseta many can sometimes get away with sounding above theyr level/pro/spanish etc. but the rithm part speaks the truth about a player every time... if one has great rithm they can do chromatic scales as a falseta and still sound good.

I could talk about this forever, infact i wanted to a while back when i made a rythm thread back a few months ago, mibe its time to ressurect that.
members could donate rithm patterns, togheder with a audio example or togheder we can just guess the patterns used by other guitarists from popular albums or find alternative fingering to getting the same effect.
(ofcourse i am doing all this for selfish reasons cause i want an unlimited pool of nice rithm patterns to use for different palos (and when i say togheder i mean mostly You guys cause i am not sharing the ones i transcribed allready...they are mine )..but it might be usefull to others too)

where does that pattern fall in the compas ?

The Chusco pattern isn't in this lesson. We just got on the subject of unorthodox rasgueado patterns. I have heard Chusco use that one in Alegrias or Solea por Bulerias.
My new guitar is a french polished cutaway blanca made by my friend Glenn Canin. He also made the cedar top negra in this video lesson. It is super nice. One of the best guitars I have ever played......seriously.

Thats great about your guitar, congratulations, so how many do you have now ? and are you gonna hang on to the other one or just stick with this one ? are you one of those guitarists that keeps em even if you dont play it again or are you going to sell it ?

I have 2 Glenn Canin guitars, A Lester Devoe negra (for sale) and a Montalvo Fleta Model blanca. I recently sold my 1961 Ramirez.........I am keeping both Canins for sure. They are both pretty spectacular.

fair enough, i would be very tempted to sell all but the one i like the most and buy a spectacular mic for performing mibe a Newman (or mibe wireless mic system) or some nice recording equipment, or nice reverb.
theres always so much to have out there mibe i would buy a cheaper guitar to have as back up or drunken partyes.
but since you have 4 u could do all that just by letting 2 go anyway, i am just dreaming out loud
i bet you are putting the money back into your recording studio ? id love to see a photo when its done.
Sorry i am going a litlle off subject but i allways wandered.. What are your walls made out off ? are the walls in a ideal recording studio soposse to suck up the natural reverb and or amplifie it? I would guess suck it up cause natural reverb from a small room would be the first give away to a home recording wouldnt it ? that way u have the option of adding any kind of reverb later. ( i know a litlle trick to get ride of some of the natural reverb after but it also kills some of the "air" you acctualy do want in the recording)
I wont ask you anymore questions for today after this i promisse i only ask cause i was so so impressed by that sound u had in the last buleria you did with that guy that it stayed with me.

On the subject of nonstandard rasgueado again. I don't expect the ones that I suggested to become classics however I do expect them to give more facility and crispness to the classic patterns by virtue of their systematic nature. And if I find that I like the sound of one or two then I can adapt them for specific purpose. Here are two.
Buleria three beats of semiquavers endng on beat ten. eami iami ieam i. It is real easy to do even at full speed. Here is the same principle applied to triplets ami imi iam i.

Yes, I am selling the Devoe to pay for some studio expenses..... I am building the main recording room to have a natural reverb that will be totally smokin for acoustic instruments. It will also kill for the huge rock drums sound. A well designed room doesn't need to dampened. My control room will have some treatment (RealTraps) and my vocal booth will also. A completely dead room is horrible for recording. Anechoic chambers, from my understanding (I have never been in one) make human beings very uncomfortable and they can only be in them for short periods without experiencing emotional duress. We need ambience. One of the things that is wrong with my current recording environment is that I put foam up everywhere. Big mistake. Don't do it.
I have a really cool wireless system for live and a small pedalboard that has my wireless reciever,reverb,EQ and a Direct Box so that when I go to the gig, I just ask for an XLR cable and tell the engineer to set the EQ flat with no effects. My wireless transmitter is tiny (about the size of a book of matches) and it has a built in mic. I mount this inside the soundhole with velcro. This allows me to be completely isolated from other on stage noise and gives me the ability to make the monitors insanely loud if I need it. I used an RTA to analyze the EQ curve outside the guitar and matched it with the EQ in my pedalboard so it doesn't have that wierd middrange hump that occurs when you stick a mic inside. I also have a Sennheiser mic that I bought from the sound engineer that used to work for Antonio Canales. He used to stick this particualr lavalier inside El Viejin, Jesus de Rosario and Ramon Jimenez's guitars for the monitor mix because Canales wanted the monitor levels onstage incredibly loud. The wireless setup is great and having the freedom is killer. No body pack and I can easily access the mut button on the transmitter so when we do a Fin de Fiesta without mics, I can just switch it off.
Recording Mics....I have a bunch. I have 2 Oktava MK 012's that were modded by Michael Joly. They blow any Nuemann KM-184 pair I have heard out of the water. I have a pair or AKG C 414 TLII mics. They are also great mics and are very versatile. I have a vintage AKG C60 tube pencil mic with the original Telefunken AC701k tube inside. That is one bad ass mic. I had another, but I had to sell it. Also a vintage AKG C 451. I have an ADK Area 51 TT Large Diaphragm tube condenser that is really great for vocals. It has also been modded. For dynamic mics I have 2 Sennhieser MD421's and 4 Shure SM57s and an SM58 as well as some no name Chinese dynamic mics that actually sound great on drums. Last but certainly not least are my 3 Naiant omni directional condensers.
Preamps are a custom 4 channel tube preamp that I built myself, a Vintech Dual 1272 (neve clone) and a D.A.V. Broadhurst Gardens No.1U preamp. 2 RNC 1773 compressors and 2 modded ART Tube EQs. Blue Sky Media Desk monitors, Yamaha NS-10s. Logic Studio, ProTools LE, 2 UAD-1 cards, 3 TC Powercore Cards, a PowerMac G5 dual 2.0ghz and enough (legally purchased) native plugins to make your brain numb. I have some other stuff that I can borrow from a good friend anytime I need it, Like a BLUE Blueberry mic,SIEMENs/Telefunken V78 preamps etc.....
It has taken me 10 years to collect all of this stuff and learn to use it and now that I am nearly finished with the second most important piece of gear......the room (your ears are the single most important piece of gear for an engineer), I am ready to start taking on more serious projects.
Gear that I still want to get..........a Nuemann U87, a pair of Earthworks cardiod condensers, 1 or 2 Heil PR 30 mics. 2 Distressors, 4 channel Hardy preamp........this is just the top of the list.
After I sell my Devoe (to finish building the room) all I will have is the Glenn Canin guitars and the Mexican Montalvo which is beat to holy crap so bad that I couldn't really sell it.

Yes, very exciting. I did record my CD myself in various closets and bedrooms. I mixed most of it myself and it was mastered by the legendary Bernie Grundman. Bernie gave me some encouraging words about my mixes, so I got more serious and eventually people were offering me money to record them.
After the new studio is finished, the first sessions I have booked will be some string quartet tracks for an album of boleros I have been working on way too long and also a local rock band called United by Failure who have sort of Tool/Muse kind of vibe. And of course I will be recording myself a lot.
I am making this new studio as "proper" as I can on a very tight budget. It will be a huge improvement over what I am used to working with.

Jason, building a studio is incredibly satisfying..... I am a retired sound engineer I started in 2002 I live in the country so I have lots of room. I started by building a 40 by 80 foot building on a cement slab The controlroom is in the corner 20 x 20 but actually has 8 walls so no walls are parallel and the ceiling is sloped (sissor trussus) I used double walls and double windows (on angles) the windows look out onto a 20x24 floating dance floor (gotta keep the girls happy) One of the window looks into the drum room and another into the vocal booth With modern recording software I just left my soundcraft in its case leaving lots of room in the control area ..amp rac built in to the wall etc. I used the best sounding multi chanel stereo i could find to add to the choices of monitors ns-10s and jbls and flighted the rears and sides then I hung a 10 foot screen above the windows and put a projector on the opposite wall ( for watching videos) the screen is made with white valure and linnin so it does help to stop sound reflection on that giant wall I find the rest of the building sounds great, with a huge natural reverb and because the dance floor is open to the whole area its a great party room.
Anyways ... other than the continuous decorating the project took all of 3 years to get from forest to studio.

Wow C, Sounds like a great space. My place isn't quite as big , but then again I am in the city, so it is kind of a miracle that I am able to do this at all. It is indeed very satisfying to realizing your dreams. Congradulations on yours.

C & Jason, What are you guys using for recording software? The new logic is out and it looks like it's been improved a lot by Apple. Also, they have thrown in the kitchen sink as far as plugs, virtual instruments, etc.

flo. in case you've missed it. cool edit has become adobe audition. it has the same interface, only you can do more editing in multitrack view without changing the original files. i think the current version is audition 2. i like it because it's feels stripped down, but still contains everything i need.. but then my needs are very simple.

Yes Val .....of course there is a small kitchen and a toilet room .. several times someone has had to stay over night. also a change room for the dancers that could act as a third isolation booth for recording but I havent used it for recording yet
I use cubase as a recording platform I have a ton of analoge gear (some cool old stuff) Lots of synths and keyboards as well
