Hola Yesterday some 50 organisers and aficionados met in the Peña Puerto Lucero in Sanlúcar for a homenaje to an incredible woman, Encarna Marin Sallago "La Sallago", soon to celebrate her 89th birthday and the greatest-ever singer from Sanlùcar. She was presented with flowers, the insignia de oro de la Peña and a boxed set of her recordings. We all had the opportunity to buy a CD specially compiled for the occasion and she was ready to sign them all with a smile. Still bright and lively, she captivated everyone with some great fandangos and bulerías: when she called for a table on which to play compas during her bulerias, it was a moment muy especial. Fernando de la Morena, Carmen de la Jara and a couple of young cantaoras de Sanlúcar also sang in her honour, all accompanied by the guitar of Antonio Higuero. Held in a fine and friendly Peña, with great tapas and manzanilla, it was one of those rare magical moments of flamenco that can never be forgotten. Suerte Sean

Whatever happend to Maria Vargas? She was a favorite of mine from Sanlucar also. I have often wondered: she is sensational. I have a CD and saw her once live. I asked around and was told that she married a very rich ganadero and retired from singing to live in luxury Hope you tried their croquetas de puchero: I thought their tapas were good though I never liked Solear manzanilla. A great Peña, though. Sean
