Bad luck Dom, it really does **** you off doesn't it, when you trust people to make an honest transaction and then they mess you about.
I've been lucky on ebay, (so far ) but I've been on the wrong end of online shopping with one store, which has certainly put me off using them again. Guess that's the problem with buying online, really quick and easy and convenient, but too easy to get stung.

You should only buy from buyers with many positive feedbacks.
But pay attention: some sellers register, buy or sell 20, 30 or more articles each for 1 Dollar, so that they have many feedbacks and all of them positive, and then they sell expensive things like mobile phones, TVs, etc. and rip the people off because everyone is thinking that the seller is trustable (100% positive!). So you should also look at the details of the feedbacks and not only at the 100%!

yeah ailsa its a bit disenchanting when this sort of thing happens. I guess most of us(and i beleive most people are) who are honest, expect the same from others and when it doesnt happen its surprising. Its easy to be naive when you have ethics and principles. Its easy to rip someone off when you dont.
Yeah i know arash, she did only have four feedbacks paypal refund policy gave me confidence though (ill still lose 25 bucks )

I got an official looking e-mail allegedly from 'eBay' saying that I was about to loose my rating because I had defaulted with a payment for a pair of trainers I never ordered any trainers and when I went to open it up the safety software on my computer went mad saying 'warning - don't open' etc. So I bined it. I guess it would have been a scam looking for me to forward my details for checking -----Aye! that'll be right!

Thats got me worried. I've been trying to sell a guitar on e-bay and all I've gotten so far is people e-mailing me during and after the close to make a low-ball offer, one guy is really ticking me off, he won't go away. I don't want to go crying to e-bay about it but I will soon. I don't know why they can't just bid on it, some of them are only $50.00 shy of the reserve. Now I'm afraid if I do sell it I might get ripped off. I think I will wait until I have transferred the money out of PayPal before shipping(if anybody bids during the actual auction, which is kind of the idea I thought). If it doesn't sell this time I won't list it there again.

Jim,
Any emails sent to you by ebay will also be in your ebay messages. If you don't have anything in your ebay messages it's not legit. I get these all the time.

Jim, check your "selling preferences" in the "My Ebay" section. Automatically block bidders who are in countries you won't ship to (for me thats ASIA and AFRICA, where most of the scammers originate), and block bidders with negative feedback ratings and/or more than 3 Non-Paying Bidder strikes.
This will solve HALF of the problem. The other half:
Specifiy on the auction page that the auction is ONLY open to bidders with 95% POSITIVE feedback or more, and they MUST have at least 25 TOTAL feedbacks.
Then if you notice anyone placing a bid who does not meet your requirements, simply CANCEL their bid (you are within your rights to do this).
And lastly, NEVER make an off-ebay deal, no matter how tempting the offer is.
Jb

I get about 5 of these per week. Claiming to be from Ebay/Paypal. Your credit card details need updating, blah, blah, blah.

im sure you'd call her a crackwhore too if she ripped you off 185 bucks
so anyway, i offer my unconditional apologies to any crack users or ladies of the night who may be reading. i was just frustrated and just came out with it. i didnt really think about the wider implications and didnt mean to throw you in the same basket as the ebay hag.

I don't know any more. I'm so indignant at the prejudice against other members of my sex who provide a valuable community service that I've forgotten what the original problem was. Perhaps it was too much of them. Or not enough. (Just kidding )

Yeah, Dom, I think you're not really being fair there, EBay scammers are much worse in my book than someone who makes money the hard way or likes to unwind with a little bit of freebasing...
Dom knows this already, but I got half stung buying a Geronimo Mateos (Madrid) blanca Jerez model on eBay. I should have known better (the place was basically on online pawnshop) but got sucked into the bidding and couldn't let go. Guitar was described as excellent condition, no damage, starting bids and even final bid were reasonable for a hand-made all-solid guitarra flamenca. A week later, from another continent via reasonable shipping costs, arrived a nice big foam filled box, inside the box there was a nice case, inside the case there was a nice guitar, and the guitar looked like this (see below) The cracks went all the way through
I complained to PayPal and got more than half the price refunded then got a guitar make here to glue it up nice for me Ended up costing me about $US450 so those sellers can kiss my crack. Try to read all feedbacks before participating
