The Long and Winding Post..

My first post of the year (happy new year, BTW, guys :-)

Several things happened before Christmas which got me much more into flamenco and excited about it than I ever have been.

The first was an email from a local flamenco dancer who heard about me on the grapevine and wanted to know if I fancied accompanying him and his partner - the local (Spanish) flamenco dance teacher - at some shows they do. The email brought me out in goosebumps, but of course I am nowhere near qualified to accompany. I sent him a long email back, explaining my lack of experience, RSI problem etc, etc, and wished him the best of luck. However, I can't help thinking about it and started thinking maybe I should start building up some basic material and go along to their classes some day...

Secondly, I saw (and heard) Tomatito for the first time, on his Encuentro video. The effect it had on me was a bit like when I first saw/heard Van Halen play. Outrageous stuff - so original and so damn funky. I just *had* to study this stuff properly to see what on earth he was doing.

Thirdly, I experimented with slightly unorthodox rasgueado and managed to come up with some that actually worked for me (bearing in mind my RSI problem).

..Then I bought Flamenco Master - wow! why didn't I get this ages ago? I've always had a reasonable senbse of rhythm but bulerias had always eluded me, now at last I'm getting somewhere and its all making sense. After studying falseta scores closely to deteremine how they relate to the compas, and then trying them out with Flamenco Master, this stuff is actually slotting into place. Brilliant.

..then I got Saura's film for Christmas. Hubba hubba! More on this another time...

So there you go. Enough rambling from me. I decided around Christmas that from now on I need to play more (flamenco), and talk less, and I promised myself I wouldn't post in Flamenco Forum again until I had actually recorded something to share with you (see uploads).

There, I feel much better now :-)

Glad to hear the good news! By all means keep in contact with those folks and pop in to play a bit. You have to start somewhere and why wait till tomorrow?

Jon,
nice to see you around here. Glad you've gotten all hyped up. Don't let the RSI stop you from playing for the dancers, you don't need to be playing tremolo for them anyway.
