This Tuesday Mary Ann Kennedy played Rumba Nostalgilica from Juan Martin' cd, Rumbas Originales. This was quite good unlike fusion rumbas. Juan Martin is to appear on the programme ,Global Gathering, next Tuesday probably with an interview as well as a performance. The previous week a track, Cuba y espana, from the same album was played which was n't nearly so good. Donald

Hi Zorro, Sorry to butt in....but I think Donald's post was just to alert listeners in Scotland that there is a programme coming up that they might want to tune into. Having anything at all related to Flamenco is very unusual here. So I guess that was his point.

I think Donald is trying to say that he liked the "Rumba Nostalgica" song by JM. Thats fair enough. When I first got into Flamenco, I thought it was OK too. It reminded me a bit of PDL's "Rio Ancho", but IMHO the latter is MUCH better.
Anyway... PUBLICLY ADMITTING to actually LIKING Juan Martin is a bit of an invitation for a stoning on this forum (just something to bear in mind, Donald ).
But lets hope the folk that listen to Radio Scotland are none the wiser. I think Ron listens to Radio 4 instead...

I've never quite understood the hostility many players have against Juan Martin, anyone care to elaborate? LOL
I think his method books are terrible, and his solo books almost useless to any but the absolute beginner, but I think some of the more advanced pieces in his solo books are worth learning (even though the advanced player that would benefit from them most would already know more advanced material too...)

KRichards, if Gerardo Nunez ever does a show up North, you should go to it. even if you have to travel a bit to get there. If you really love Flamenco it would be worth the journey.
Anyway, there are always DVDs and CDs for those of us who can't make it to the live venues.
But you're right- JM is not so bad compared to some...

I 've seen Juan Martin live before 3 years ago and his performance was good. I am aware that he faces criticism from performers and guitarists at various levels . The main point is that he and Paco Pena have taken the trouble to currently tour outside London. This is someting the heroes of the jumped up people who can't be bothered putting up a semblance of their real names can be bothered with.

Juan has done a lot to promote and popularize Flamenco outside Spain. That is NOT in doubt, and he gets due respect for that.

Kylie Minogue ROCKS. She tours every year and me and my mum love her concerts .Not like that Aretha Franklin who thinks she's too good to play in Britain and who's fans think that they are so cool. How dare they condescend to me when I know music at least as well as them.

Were you being sarcastic, GuitarBuddha? Gerardo Nunez DOES tour in Britain, and so do some of the other guitarists. But the home of Flamenco is in Spain, and thats where its cultural heart is. Besides, Flamenco is not mainstream music like Kylie Minogue, and so you can't expect Flamenco artists to travel to venues in the middle of nowhere and just HOPE someone will trun up to watch them play...

We don't expect anyone to travel to venues in the 'middle of nowhere'. But we are delighted when they do. And Donald is right to make the point that Paco Pena and Juan Martin are two of the very few who do this. Thats why we like them so much.
Anyway, I'm visiting Malaga and Cordoba (Paco Pena's hometown...there's irony for you) in October.
