machine tuners

I just want to ask you guys, what separates good from bad in machine tuners? Durability, precision and visuals are what pop into my mind, but besides those, do different tuners make an audible difference besides holding the tuning better or worse? What kinds are there, and what makes you like the ones you use?

Also, would there be any sense in using something else than plastic for the rolls where the strings attatch?

I use as standard nicolo alessi from italy, very nice and they ghave a mechanism inside a pin and collet that fits into the inner hole, this makes for less friction on the wood of the head and makes a smoother turn. the gearing is good and they look nice. I also use fusteros but the gearing can be questionable at times although they look the business!
goto are also good for the gearing. I used to use rogers from the uk but the cost.....!

Mt Magenta.
Besides the quality of the tuner: durability and precision of the tuning, a factor is weight which changes sound. Some tuners are quite heavy. Its a compromise. In order to make a quality tuner you have to use a good baseplate and a certain size of gears. It all adds weight.
