Yeah, you hear a lot of stories about gitano superstition, snakes, funerals and the colour yellow to quote just a couple or three. Story goes that if a real Gypsy in UK sees a single magpie without its mate they'll lock themselves away for the rest of the day.

Guess the Peteneras legend got mixed up with someone having a bad day and grew from there because of its content. One story is that the rumour was started by jealous women. but there you go, who knows. End of day the peteneras, zapateado and farruca all have their place in flamenco and I'm glad the guitarists are still respecting them.

Hi Jim.
This thread's been going on a while, I see! I've been seeing more and more farrucas every year, in the states usually done by a woman in pants. Sara Baras did a great one this February, had the audience breathless in silent suspended moments.

But for my money, the best farruca I've seen has been Manolete's, I've seen him do it twice at the Villamarta in Jerez in recent years. This year's festival de Jerez had a twist on the farruca --Rafaela Carrasco's modernist interpretation had three guys dancing a farruca in bata de cola. The press dubbed it "falduca." Quite the gimmick, taking the most macho butch dance of them all and putting a frilly skirt on it.

I also heard it done with cante more often than not, usually the standard letra about a farruca grieving the death of her man, or sometimes a letra from tangos de malaga.
