José López Bellido RIP

It's curious. I woke up this morning dreaming about sitting in one of the cave rooms at the Escuela de Carmen de las Cuevas in Granada taking a guitar lesson from Jorge el Piseo. Each lesson I would spend time admiring his Bellido Blanca. It was a really nice guitar. It used to drive me a little crazy when, at the end of each lesson, Jorge would casually flip the guitar over, grab a pen and a blank sheet of music paper, and place the paper on the guitar's back so he could scribble the notes to the day's lesson out for the students to take home and practice. I hadn't thought about that in years.

Then I got up and checked my computer and saw the news that Mr. Bellido had passed. RIP Maestro. You have been an inspiration. DEP.

RIP

I visited him once, a very dedicated and amiable man.
Very good Granada style guitars. Have had two of them. A very light old one and a bit more heavier newer one.

Here is his entry in the Guitarerros de Andalucia encyclopedia. Oddly, they don’t mention any famous flamenco players, but his brother Manuel gets the bigger entry and list of players such as Tomatito, M. Brenes, David Russell, etc. Any opinions about José’s guitars vs Manuel?

Here is a 1990s Manuel Bellido. It has the 9 fan struts like Fleta but with reduced thickness. Manual later abandoned this head design in favour of one he had used earlier.

I visited Manuel and his brother several times in the 1990s. At that time Jose's guitars were lighter and in the style of many luthiers in Granada. I didn't find any that I liked but I had the chance to play and excellent one in London. I have a couple of Manuel's guitars - my 1990 guitar is like the one in this video - one of the best guitars I have owned.
