Hmmm, I'm not sure myself. listened through some on the way home from work in the car.

The Bulerias was awesome. Sounded like Paco at points and Vicente at others and obvs himself too! I really got goose bumps!

the rest??

But I imagine it grows on you... but that doesnt necessarily mean good.

I know what you mean. The bulerias is def the best track. It sounds like the Makarines recorded the their part and emailed it to Toni, or they are too far away from the mic. Not that I’m complaining, just letting everyone know my golden ears.

The segurilla is OK. Would have been nice to have some more meaty falsetas.

The rest, I sort of enjoy it as background music, whereas the bulerias is like active listening.

All that said, I don’t have any other flamenco guitar to listen too right now, save the new VA album.

I expected something better. Except from the Buleria, the rest of the pieces unfortunately go unnoticed.
Of course, some parts are interesting.

So I was listening in the car…something majorly wrong with the fidelity of this recording. No bass. Most likely when they monitored it for mastering, the monitors had too much bass so they reduced it, which was a huge mistake.

A friend went to see Vai in New Orleans and while in the restroom, which must of been during the guitar solo :-), heard a guy say "This guy being paid by the note or what?"

My friend said Vai's act didn't go over in New Orleans.

I respect Vai's ability to the extent I muster interest in that type of playing, but don't care for his output. I can't say the same for AR. He has written some great music IMO.

Wow, ok. I listened to the song discussed (bulerias from the album, thanks for posting, though I found it myself). I said there is no darn bass in the spectrum, you said “the answer is in the long ass video”, I said I am not going to WATCH the long video to find the answer, please point to the time stamp!!! . Unless you actually don’t know why there is no bass, if so, thanks for posting the same video that pops on my new feed all day, but no thanks I am not going to sit through it. Unless there is some revolution coming with this album, which I am not hearing yet.

Ricardo , thats all that you saw in the 40m plus video?
strange , your spanish is really good, it doesnt make sense .

He explains the production , i think not all details .
He tried to do something more pure , even with mistakes and less mixed/production

Oh so maybe he was too far from the mic and that’s what he had to work with in post editing since he only was doing one take? Or he just cut the bass as Ricardo thinks

Solo flamenco guitar is a dead end. It's going nowhere. Dammit! I'd rather listen to Rosalia instead. It's really grown on me.

And that’s why I’ve lowered my expectations and take what I can enjoy from new albums. Can’t expect another Colores del Fuego or Vivencias Imaginadas or Jucal. Paco was the only guy to consistently amaze. Tomatito always puts out an enjoyable album too

I said I am NOT GOING TO WATCH A FREAKIN 40 minute VIDEO to find out … you claim to have the answer having watched and I asked for a time stamp. “IN EDITO” means live in the studio, like Van Halen etc., they let mistakes of playing go on tape. That has ZERO to do with a mastered recording with compression etc., and explains not why there is NO bass on voice, palmas, etc. If he does not address the issue that there is no bass on the recording then there is “no answer”. In the end I hear overdubs etc., so with except perhaps of solo guitar tracks, this is NOT a live studio recording/capture.

Troll chat bot alert!

If there was evidence needed that this is a fake account this is it.

It's on page 1 of 'how to piss off foro members'...
1. Insult solo guitar
2. Praise Rosalia
3. Praise the doctor and Andalusian guitars.

To be honest no, I can't see that it's in trouble. But I'm not looking in that direction. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

I don't really care that much about solo guitar any more. Like many people, that's what draws one in, but you eventually graduate.

But you are a beginner so... it's understandable you may be focusing on what's happening in the world of solo guitar.

I'd wager there's a whole heap of solo flamenco guitar music out there that you've not listened to yet. Why not look towards that instead of Rosalia.

I do follow what is happening with flamenco in general in the rest of the world. A few weeks ago I thought Beyoncé wanted to make flamenco commercially succesful. But what is she doing?

It's in 4/4 time. I hear palmas. But I have no idea why they called it flamenco.

kids are great Stu

i never forget , maybe 3 years ago my daughter ask me at 7h45 am Why we live to die one day
ahahahah , and many other Filosofical things , kids are great

Good stuff. Nothing to make you feel inadequate and nihilistic quite like kids casually and unexpectedly rubbing the inherent fragility of entire existence in your face.

- "Hey dad, catch this!"
- "What is it?"
- "My 9PM 'trying to delay hitting the pillow' philosophical inquiry. Today, it's DEATH. Tell me about DEATH, dad."

My daughter asked me about a random question about space one evening, and for a lapse of judgment painted myself into a corner by somehow managing to arrive at telling about Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of Milky Way galaxy that is slowly sucking us all in. They pressed themselves against me and my daughter fell asleep against my shoulder. Now they ask every single night "How close is the black hole to us now?" -"About the same as yesterday, still 26,000 light years." -"But it can't be the same, how long is that in meters?" AAAAARGH.

As an adult, I still have these questions, so as a dad I make it a point to discover some answers so that any question the kids toss, I field them like a pro.

Why we live do die one day: biological evolution (natural selection plus random mutations). To put it into perspective, the hydra and the Planaria flatworms can regenerate and have interesting DNA structures such that, if they are not killed by external sources they live “forever”. As long as there are materials in the environment around them they can use to continue regeneration. These creatures will expire when the earth and sun die (5 billion years or so, but likely much earlier than that for earth biosphere), but there is a potential humanity can save many organizims out in space somewhere. The potential to alter humanity to have a similar potential is something to consider (as Conan’s girlfriend said, do you WANT to live forever??). Please note, starting with THIS question, that “why questions” all have “how” answers, and are endless regress questions that are not the proper formulations. I try to get the kids to understand that right away.

Tell me about death: remember what it was like before you were born and you had no homework, obligations, illness pain or stress? It is like that, so don’t worry about it.

Black Holes in General: If the sun Disappeared and was magically replaced by a black hole of the SAME MASS or size, (horizon will be much smaller), nothing would change about the solar system other than it would get cold right away. Planets would orbit at the same distance forever. Gravity doesn’t “suck” suddenly. Sagittarius A star is no different, it is not sucking anything. Any space rock that would fall into the gravity well of the sun will get incinerated near the surface…if it fell into a black hole event horizon it would get destroyed as well. Which would be worse kids?? Only if there is a collision course in the works will the black hole be feeding on anything …. Unless there is somebody real close by like a star that is emitting plasma. Even then the star does NOT get sucked in, it orbits forever, only the emitted plasma starts flowing into it. The distance of 26k light years is about 245 quadrillion Kilometers. (Hopefully the kids already know that a kilometer is 1000 meters and the order goes up from 100k to millions, billions, trillions, quadrillions, etc.).

The kids also know “why” they have to file the nails flat and store glue in a plastic bag.

hahah yeah. my 7 year old drops some profound truth bombs on me sometimes that leave me feeling pretty stunned.

Some terrible insight into the human condition right as shes falling off to sleep and im sat there, awake in the darkness wondering about the futility of it all!

find myself avoiding the darker subjects these days as shes very keen to learn and im keen to share, and sometimes share too much about the plight of existence.

Trying to get her good at the violin then Ive got a band!

err wasnt that beyonce on that video you shared?

or is that a seperate question? if so, the the answer is no. I dont think her voice is perfect for flamenco.

Me too. However, I also try to dumb it down just enough to keep them engaged. They'll get visibly frustrated when something goes over their head. I add in details when they ask logical questions. I don't answer all questions straight - if I think they should be able to figure it out with their cognitive capacity, I will make them think. Then I give teaser hints trying to reel them in. I also derive quasi-sadistic pleasure from sometimes giving them deliberately misleading troll answers just to see if they figure it out.

I also have a principal guideline that I need to frequently remind myself of, that kids are always a little bit smarter than you think. So I try to constantly challenge them, while trying to avoid frustrating them. It's one of the most fascinating aspects of being a parent to observe at close range their gradual expansion of consciousness and awareness and the resulting paradigm shifts, some of which seem to happen in discrete, radical quantum leaps in how they relate to and reason about the world around them. The development of self-reflection, empathy and systemic thinking are also very cool to keep track of.

This reminds me of another idea I try to keep in mind; not only are you growing your kids - your kids are growing you and teaching you things, and you have to constantly update your conceptions on what are they. You can freeze your ideas about them for a few weeks (we have other things to attend to), but they will inevitably demolish your mental models of their persona, and you have to get to know the new person, and adjust your interactions accordingly. It really is complex stuff, but also intriguing and rewarding. It's also why I'm skeptical of any broad-stroke parenting guidelines and ''interpersonal optimization algorithms" ostensibly based on psychological research. I believe in and rely on the wisdom of my mammalian instincts to guide me as a parent.

P.s. Admirable commitment to enlightening your offspring! When I was a kid I hated it when adults would refuse to answer my questions, or tried to make things too simple.

Same here! We could form an ensemble. Stu, Gals & the Foul Stuff. I'd add the necessary grit, critics might compare it to the raspy voice of Louis Armstrong.

The foul stuff!

Good points in your post re parenting. I subscribe to similar ethos.

My daughter, at 4 said, as we were walking through the park. "Where did all this stuff come from? You know I sometimes think this whole world is just all inside a dragons mouth!" 🐉
