Awaiting approval

There are replies in the classifieds section that have been awaiting approval for months, over a year in some cases.

How does the approval thing work, is it solely reliant on Simon having time to do it?

Cheers,
Nigel

It is down to me and those ads have not met the rules for advertising i.e. do not join just to place an ad. I hope this is clear.

I wholeheartedly agree. The Foro does not exist solely as a shill for someone who wants to unload a guitar.

Ah ok, thank you, Simon.

I was just wondering why a reply to me from the seller was not approved in Argaith's listing for his Anders Elliason, and Mark Indigo had the same issue for replies to his Conde listing recently. Some replies get approved sometimes months after posting, sometimes not at all.

Totally understand if it's not possible to keep up with it all, or if there's some other reason.

Agreed, it’s annoying, as is the use of other sections to either push a product or solicit a sale. I think it rankles because it takes advantage of the sincere efforts of other members to create meaningful content and keep the Foro alive in an era where forums such as this are less and less common. It’s a credit to the Foro that it’s collectively spurned monetization. To take advantage of that goodwill for personal gain is parasitical, at best.

Simon has more than once requested that people limit their posts to the section and avoid discussions. We’ve got to remind ourselves that he doesn’t get paid for any of this, it’s up to us to appreciate the amount of work that this can be for him and self-police. If an ad starts to have more than a couple of posts in it then the participants might want to question the necessity.

Maybe this is one area where it would be appropriate to monetize the Foro? Would members be amenable to making a donation to the Foro whenever they post to the classifieds section? Maybe $5 a pop? I mean all posts to the section, not just posts from the original advertiser, but the replies, too.

I completely understand yours and Barkwell's points.

I'm really just referring to 'is this still for sale?' type replies, and listings with many photos that won't fit in a single post. I guess there's the PM route, but I don't know if the notifications work reliably. I think this is a great place to buy or sell an instrument, and I've been on fora that charge a small fee to list. However, there may be tax implications that would be a PITA for Simon.

I'm really grateful for the continued existence of the foro, including the classifieds, which I have used twice before my current listing, so I am not complaining at all, I assume these are just oversights?

(post I made in this thread was awaiting approval this morning, now deleted. I wasn't signed in when I looked on my phone this morning (I think if we are signed in we can read our own posts in classifieds that others can't see while waiting for approval) and I can't remember what I posted, as it was over a year ago! I guess it was a reply to the user asking for info about PJL's LA concert album... so really not important now)

I have donated last time it was asked for, and will do again at the drop of a hat. Also happy to contribute to Rob's idea of donating for classified posting if that helps.

yeah, that's me! I'm not tech savvy enough to crunch pics down so I can get them all in one post... I think I did try to do that with my recent listing, and I succeeded in making them smaller than they were originally to get them to upload. Maybe I should have persevered with that and made them smaller. It's tricky when I don't really know what I'm doing I get worried I'm going to mess the whole thing up and lose the pics completely!
EDIT: just thought, maybe I could have just kept editing the one post and adding pics to it, would that have worked?

I think the PM notifications work, but I actually missed two PM's recently through "user error" (as with the pics it's my own fault, not the foro) - I think the notification says something like "You have at least 1 new message" which I just read as "You have 1 new message" and read the most recent, not realising that there were 2 more new unread ones underneath. Yeah, I know, duh me!

Likewise, and I hope my comments are not taken as critical. I completely understand this foro is pretty much a one man show, and the huge amount of work it entails.

Not to nit pick, but those are good examples of what Simon was talking about. I don’t know of the others but there you can clearly see some one said NO LONGER available, yet it was asked as if “are you sure?” and the other totally off topic.

Yes man, give it up. That is the main point Simon was making. The deal was clearly CLOSED, so you can’t keep asking about it.

Neither of the threads i linked to were "those ads have not met the rules for advertising i.e. do not join just to place an ad."

It is NOW visible and not showing as awaiting approval, but when i pasted the link the posts showing the guitar was sold and the one after asking if it was still for sale were still awaiting approval, so not visible.

This thread is good because it can highlight that we should expect posts to the classified section to experience some latency while waiting for approval, which can vary based on the content of the post and the time available to Simon to deal with it. For sure my reply was intended in a more general sense and not directed at your ad, I hope I didn’t come across as scolding or anything like that. Let’s hope the guitar sells soon to someone who’ll get a lot of pleasure out of it and all will end well. 👍

OK mate, stay cool. The one I was talking about had zero indication if the guitar was sold. You don't REALLY think that if a classified was visibly marked SOLD, I would then ask if it was still available, do you? Some of my questions and comments might seem stupid, but I am not THAT stupid.

The first one is Argaith. he's hasn't "only joined to place an ad" hes a long time member.

And yes the other one IS an example of that kind of behaviour, but yet HAS been approved.

I feel like silddx seems to be getting unfair heat over a fairly simple inquiry here.

That one silddx has asked if still available. Of course he asked that BEFORE the post above his was approved. (stating its sold)
Cos asking if its available when the OP has said it isnt...makes him look pretty silly!

(hence the whole point of the original question) so hard for anyone to talk about these threads due to the approval lag.

Please don’t comment on a classified ad. Send a PM or email, instead. Approvals sometimes do not show up easily for me. I check every day.

My personal view is that if the Classifieds section is a damn nuisance for Simon, I feel it should be buried. Finished.

It's clearly a very sensitive topic, I'll stay well clear from now on.
