The Barba of Seville.

What makes you say Barba? It is not Barba's typical headstock. The central protrusion has a media luna type cut out, rather than the extended point of Barba. Barba 'side scrolls' (if that's the word?) are much flatter. Decorations are also unusual for a Barba.

Hard to find a good image of the label but seems not to have the heavy black border, or previous red border that Barba had.

In the past someone here thought it could be Andres Dominguez, I think based on the decoration and the mixed wood. But the headstock is not like Andres Dominguez.

I think Jose Tanaka's guitar is rosewood which has sapwood within it. It is not made of mixed pieces of wood. Some pieces of rosewood naturally have pale areas of sapwood.

I don't care really, but yes I am a flamenco guitar as art object enthusiast! I care more about the foro, so I am taking any excuse to post a relevant comment these days as it's been quiet.

He has done this wacky hybrid before…maybe the slight alteration to the head cut had to be done for some reason:

Morante mentioned something about this some years ago, where somebody had cut the top off his Barba guitar so it could fit in his case! Maybe this was some kind of ‘artistic’ recovery/repair from such an action.

On the other hand, these ‘half and half’ jobs are nothing new, certainly not unique to any one maker. The headstock sure looks like a modified Barba, however.

Both sustain and playability are important, but clarity and definition of notes is also an element of a good guitar; also responsiveness is very important; a guitar should respond immediately to touch; there should be only the slightest effort to get the guitar to speak. I have several guitars by the same maker, blancas and negras, with different tops, cedar, and spruce. They are all set at about 2.5-2.7 at 12th. They all sound differently but are consistent in response and playability. Yes, the negras have more sustain but the type of strings we use also can impact both playability and sustain. Also, we cannot forget our playing styles which can produce a variety of sounds from the same guitar.
