Translation of Rito y Geografia del ...

Hi everyone,

I have started a change.org campaign for RTVE to translate Rito y Geografia del cante.
This is one of the most important Flamenco documentaries with 50 hours of Bulerias, Tonas and every palo. From Huelva to Murcia is a masterpiece of Flamenco history which is only available to Spanish speakers.

I do speak Spanish but there are people who can't speak Spanish.

I wonder if I can get a bit of support to get RTVE to translate it to English.

Thanks!

Interesting. However I have 72 programs on DVD (and several of those have been posted to youtube) with subtitles in English. They don’t translate the letras however, but I remember there being a website that had at least printed all the letras from Rito y geografia in spanish, which certainly would help the project if it still exists.

I have guitarra 2, not sure why it’s not up there on youtube. If folks want me to translate it I can… it really is just one interview with Rafael Aguila, student of Javier Molina, and at the end they dedicate the program to Niño Ricardo who died in 1971 and could not be featured.

Guitarra 2 is on the liste above written in roman numeral II.
I removed Lorca from the list. Now 28 episodes left.
According to Wikipedia, there are 2 Saeta aired on different dates (01/04/1972 and 09/04/1973). I don't know if it's the same episode.

Then what needs to be done is to sync the audio with the video. Most (all?) of them are badly out of sync. Any idiot, myself included, could do it with Final Cut or whatever, but it would take some time.

In the DVD set, there were occasional spots where the video did not match, but in every case it was because the video re synchronizes at some point. I assumed that this was “lesser of two evils” situation due to the analogue audio tape stretching vs the silent film reel. Since the video is more important (argueably, meaning you don’t want to splice out or leave black screens where there is no correlating audio) I felt that who ever did the work had to compromise at times, but did the best thing they could have done in the situation. The worst one was Maria Vargas where the audio is so damaged at times the pitch jumps up or down. I really think they did a super job. But if you think you can take the original film reel, clean it up, splice it exactly to the audio tape distortions and stretch marks, have fun with that.

As Ricardo rightly points out. Only if the video and/or audio are of a consistent speed that can be synched, which I doubt. I speak as an idiot with Final Cut Pro :-)

There is another rito-like TV program by Fernando Quiñones.
Does anyone have more information about it? How many episodes and who appears in which episode etc.

probably referred to this series. it really was a flamenco tv studio show, rito y geografia toured around the country.

puro y jondo is another series which could do with being translated aswell.

Programa "Flamenco" emitido por la 2 de TVE en 1975. Programa conocido por los aficionados como "Flamenco de Quiñones" (primera etapa).

Yes exactly. So the title is Rito y Geografía del Toque. The first episode - Poema de la guitarra (1964) with Nino Ricardo and young Paco is gold. I've seen a few excerpts from this episode on youtube, but in a bad quality. What irritates me is some episodes are exactly the same as rito y geografia series for example Melchor de Marchena. I think the list is not complete because I watched the one with Paco Pena on youtube yesterday. Manuel Agujeta the video above is also not on the list.

The guy from flamencoviejo lamented the fact that there were no episodes dedicated to M. Sanlucar. But both E. Melchor and P. Habichuela have 2 episodes each. Maybe M. Sanlucar was busy doing his own stuff like this. Who knows.

Don’t get irritated, understand something. Years ago this stuff was archived. Somebody got out their VHS recorder and converted the material of Rito y Geografia, which soon after got converted from VHS tape to DVD, very poorly. This series as we have discussed, was a feature on the CANTE, and always ONLY ever was. However 4 guitar players were chosen to feature (Pepe Martinez, Melchor de Marchena, Diego del Gastor, Paco de Lucia), and there were two episodes of nice guitar solos including one by Sanlcuar. Both Sanlucar and Manuel Morao where huge contributors to the project as it was about CANTE, but you see them accompany several singers. That is ALL there ever was. Whoever it was that converted them originally was not satisfied to so thought to personally choose stuff from other TVE programs and interviews, combine them with the 6 programs above, and call the whole thing, erroneously “Rito y Geografia del TOQUE”. Not having ANY Baile featured in Rito, they had to go and pick a bunch of dance stuff as well so they could make a 3 volume set that included a fake “Rito y Geografia del BAILE” as well.

Years later they finally got around to cleaning up the ORIGINAL Rito y Geografia (the creators made a joke that the previous attempt was so low budget the VHS tape was redone on top of some old porn 😂), after which 72 programs were mastered beautifully and painstakingly with love and aficion, the economy hit and the project was not completed until a few years ago, long after DVD packaging was obsolete. So be DAMN THANKFUL for what you actually do have and please stop your whining and contextualize the amazing amount of material you have for FREE at your finger tips, and maybe go spend the equivalent of the amount of money I have spent on those material over the years (before all this free access) on feeding the hungry and solving world problems you know so much about.

I'm thankful and more than happy. Not only me, but also any aficionado. We have the agony of choice as there are simply so many flamenco videos to watch for free. Sometimes I don't know where to start.

Almost forgot another flamenco series from 1998. Never had time to watch them properly. I found 9 capitulos on youtube. Unfortunately no translation, but letras as subtitle. It's strange no one recommended or mentioned it here on the foro.

Awesome. RTVE says "in ten chapters, Miguel Poveda and Soleá Morente as presenters will travel throughout Spain with great guest artists, and will bring us closer to today's flamenco, increasingly open to other music and cultures without losing tradition."

This contempory flamenco comes at a right time. I've been exploring more retro flamenco. Good to know younger aritsts like Esmeralda Rancapino and Paco Leon. My personal highlight was Bulerias at 43:28.
