RIP Bertrand Tavernier, Director of ...

Today's Washington Post reported the death of French film director Bertrand Tavernier. Tavernier directed many films, but his best known in the US was "Round Midnight," a 1986 film about an American jazz musician, actually played by the saxophonist Dexter Gordon, who moves to Paris. Gordon wrote many of the lines for his character. Herbie Hancock also appeared in the film and won the Academy Award for best original score.

"Round Midnight" was very good, and, to me at least, it brought out the deep link between American jazz musicians, particularly black musicians, and Paris, where they were accepted in a way they were not in the US. Another film that ran along similar lines was 1961's "Paris Blues," starring Sydney Poitier and Paul Newman. Similar theme and great acting.

Yeah, that makes me something. For me it's " coup de torchon" with Noiret, an actor I loved.
Farewell Bertrand
