Dear Aaron Peacock,

Are you by chance related to Captain Stephen Peacock, famed WWII veteran of combat in North Africa against Irwin Rommel and A retired Floor Walker at Grace Brothers Dept. Store?

Oh, my. Would that I were. I'm not related to any famous Peacock's that I know of, not even Charlie.
It's a burden of a last name, I'll tell you that.
How can one ever be just a humble Peacock?

On these tuners with build in microphone that Russian agents will listen into for doing their spying work:

- Where can I get those?
- And do these listeners count towards my chart rankings?

Well spotted . I played for his birthday party in a restaurant in South West London in about 1991. He was persuaded to join the dancers and showed some degree of talent. He was clearly an aficionado and almost certainly lurks somewhere in this premier English language flamenco forum.

Yes quite. Men like Capt. Peacock and the honorable John Steed are few and far between these days. Those denizens of the Great War trading wits and tactics with that desert fox Rommel himself deserve to be mentioned to these millennial freebie chasers.

Why there cannot be a fellow more wary of the tricks of Cold War villainy than Agent Steed.

both of them missed "the Great War" (world war I) as they weren't born until the early 1920's...

Quite. The Honorable John Wickham Gascoyne Beresford Steed personified all that is best in the British character. Seconded to the Special Operations Executive by the British Army during the last half of the World War II, Steed was instrumental in setting up a network of agents behind enemy lines who assisted the Allies as they moved forward.

After the war the SOE was dissolved and Steed moved seamlessly into MI6, where he ran agents into Communist Albania, all of whom were caught and imprisoned or executed due to his treasonous MI6 colleague Kim Philby, who was working for the Soviets.

Steed was a colorful character, known for his impeccable bespoke, Saville Row, three-piece suits and his ever-present umbrella, which contained operational equipment known only to those familiar with the trade-craft. Would that we had such men amongst us today.

There's a reason Portuguese guitars have that fancy headstock with 12 odd tensioners and such... call it antennae if you wish...
One mans umbrella is another's satellite dish...

But Peacocks assuredly cannot fly. No ever said "the peacock has landed", etc. (duly noted on my hospital charts from that 3rd floor plunge way back when...)

but I will confess to being in the kitchen with a candlestick etc...

If flamenco pertained more to espionage, I would expect much more movement from the 5th to minor 6th to major 6th etc... fertile ground FWIW...

that chappie above is searching for a sword to open that bottle with... a toast... to decapitated wine bottles (better the bottle in Steed of something else, eh?)

any more questions?

hope nothings below board for the moderators sake, merely recounting the joys of having such an appellation. I suppose that i can report my own posting to the management via the handy link below. (nearly did just now, highly inappropriate, but I'm not the one who named us.)

let's just be honest... the real danger is that any instrument built with GRU kit turns into a balalaika

You have posted one of the very few photos of John Steed, taken on one of his clandestine trips to Washington. Steed was concerned that the British MI6 officer Kim Philby was a Soviet double agent, feeding information to his handlers in Moscow and passing disinformation to the British Embassy and the CIA in Washington. It seems that the CIA's chief of counter-intelligence, James Jesus Angleton, had developed a strong friendship with Philby which may have had a homoerotic dimension. Steed tried to convince Angleton to be wary of Philby to no avail. Steed was proved right when Philby defected to Moscow, and later Angleton was fired for overzealous searches for a CIA mole. Later, Steed retired to a pastoral life in surrey, tending to his garden and writing his memoirs.

The actor who played steed had a pretty wild youth. He actually became an ardent nudist. I found the rest of this post entertainin but befuddling. I'm still on the Juan Martin level two training material though.

Quite correct Old Bean. And whilst Steed stayed in DC he recounted in his memoirs that to relax and take a few well deserved hours of rest from the tense games of CIA cat and mouse he retired to the Jernigan Suites Bar in Adams Morgan. Rumor has it, although he was too much of gentleman to reveal in his self biographies, that the chap had a penchant for uncovering more than one madams organ.

Great Scott! By the Jernigan Suites you must mean the eponymous suites of Mr. Richard Jernigan, Esq., who occasionally graces this forum with his observations! The same Richard Jernigan who has for decades maintained a Suite at the Hotel Emperador in Madrid, cared for in his absence by his able valet Mr. Jose Izaguirre.

Things are beginning to add up. It wouldn't be surprising if Steed and Jernigan, together, were not only involved in implementing a series of Active Measures against the Soviets, but were good friends as well. Both have family lineages that include European royalty and nobility that go back centuries. It is known that Mr. Jernigan is among the last in the Plantegenet line, and it has long been rumored that Mr. Steed is a direct descendant of the Tudors. Imagine, the War of the Roses ending up over drinks in Adams Morgan!
