Thanks Ricardo. I found the name I was looking for. It was Ovejilla.

Cool, my point is whoever wrote it as a falseta is copying the cante, and not anywhere near as an interesting way as Cepero over there. Cerpero literally plays the falseta as she sings. It’s hardly even a falseta . Anyway, it’s the basic answer to anon composing in Flamenco

Would folk "purists" (adhering to the COD's definition) consider such songs just one more element of commercial music that once may have been considered "authentic" but were now posing fraudulently as "folk music"?

Many purists (notably those in the magazine Sing Out) did say exactly that — with some justification, in my view (I speak as a fan of both the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary).

But the songs themselves presumably qualify as folk music by their original provenance.

Yes, that is one of the tunes I was thinking of. He puts those old solea falsetas in a different context. The palmas and jaleos have a lot to do with the effectiveness of it but the guy is such a great player. He leaves a lot of space when playing compas, which is usually not done in solea but with the palmas doing a jaleo thing, it gives him the freedom to lay back a bit. I'm sure you've seen his bulerias with Pirana? Lots of modern playing mixing with some tried and true details and a full on groove.

I’ve been listening to Yerai Cortes, a fantastic player who plays tons of traditional material but with a modern rhythmic sensibility. Blurring the heck out of it.

this one?

yes, that too, good stuff, i especially liked the interplay with the palmas/jaleo in the solea/jaleo.

Wikipedia posits several definitions of folk music, one I quite like is "music performed by custom over a long period of time"

The definition of folk music in the COD is:

quote:

traditional music of unknown authorship, transmitted orally.

Looks good to me.

I like that definition too, trouble is we're now back to "what does traditional mean?" We've come full circle!

Can I ask whereabouts in London are you from originally?

So if you learn a "folk song" or tune from a recording or a book it's not really proper traditional, you have to learn it from an old boy in the pub or something....

I well remember seeing the Young Tradition in the ’60s. Peter Bellamy was saying about how folk singers were supposed to sing songs learned at their mother’s knee; he didn’t have one of those, but he had one learned at his auntie’s knee.

He only found out later that she had got it from a Burl Ives record.

Just to be clear, the quote from me is not MY opinion, but was preceded in the post by "Their definition of "Traditional music" is more or less pre-industrial rural folk music."

COD - what is that?

cash on delivery?
cause of death?
classic old dude?
call of duty?
change of dressing?
crotch on display?!

i'm guessing it must be some kind of dictionary, but what is the CO?

all this talk of "folk music" is begging the question of whether flamenco is folk music or not. it's often referred to as "the art of flamenco" so you have another dichotomy:- folk music or art music?

also, i have heard of jazz being referred to as "America's classical music" and "classical music" doesn't have to be academic or necessarily written or western European - i'm thinking of Indian classical music, Persian classical music, the Al-Andalus music of north Africa.

hmmm.... i'm wondering what do they know about folk music, after it was pointed out to me that a dictionary definition of "fandango" was inadequate after i quoted a dictionary definition of some other word i can't remember now....

It's an obscure theological dictionary. Of the Church of the Holy Opossumites. IIRC they were declared heretics by the Sanctus Platipus after the Great Road-Crossing Massacre of 1381.

Originally from Gravesend, Kent. Later (after the age of 10) from Middlesex, before it got engulfed by Greater London (which is like The Blob, eating everything around it).

I guess to most non-Brits it's easier to say "London" than spend half an hour explaining there are other parts of England...

I'm from Salisbury originally, been in London 15 years now. I'm in Peckham now, previously Clapham and also spent a lot of time west, Acton, Chiswick, Shepherds Bush way. I've played quite a lot of sport across Middlesex, my rugby and cricket clubs both play in Middlesex leagues.

That one is not so difficult. Many Russians visit to admire the steeple

But the one I avoid is 'home counties'. One of my spanish students asked me were the others "shires". It all got very messy and went downhill from there.

I was Watford born and bred. Yup I say London. It makes life easier as you say

I just assume I can take the French name of any place in Britain and just add "shire" to to get the correct the name. Douvreshire, Londreshire. Cantorbéryshire. Cornouailleshire. Is that not how it works?

When I used to teach English none of the foreign students had ever heard of Salisbury, I used to show them Stonehenge as our main claim to fame ... it's a bit more famous / notorious now!

You sound like most of my old French students, except you're not shrugging and pretending not to care while smoking a Marlboro Red

We all just have to own who we are. To quote a not-at-all-embarassing president: "be you, be proud of you, because you can be do what we want to do".
