2005 Jerez Festival de Bulerias on DVD

There's somebody named William Davidson in Florida, US selling DVDs of flamenco festivals in Spain for ridicuous cheap price under $10 each! I was as a friends place in US last week and we watched the 2004 Jerez festival and he told me the 2005 festival was available soon. This is great stuff and I thought others would love getting their hands on some great flamenco video too - and cheap.

His contact is:

Hello Guest,

So what's the story ? I mean is it an official video of the festival or just someone in the audience with a camera ? What's the quality like and who is performing ?

Kate

These dvd's`are the next best thing to being there. Real flamenco in penas and festivals. I have maybe 15 of these dvd's and haven't seen them all, but have seen some really good performances. Highly recommended.

I asked around and now have it on good authority that these DvDs are well worth it, and good quality.

I emailed him this morning and got a response within the hour. The catch is that the DVDs are sold as subscription magazine, and not individually. But obviously you can choose to unsubscribe at any point. They are also partly documentaries. I think he said its about $36 per month or something like that...

Here's what the guy said in his email:

"Hi James,
Thank you for your interest in my documentaries. There are fifteen back issues available with coverage of a wide variety of flamenco activity from Andalusia. I travel to Spain several times each year and videotape flamenco festivals, ferias, pen~a presentations and some spontaneous stuff. I distribute the 90-minute DVD's about every five weeks as a video club. The complete charge for each is $6.00. After subscribers have received six issues I submit an invoice for $36.00. I've been editing and distributing the issues for about 17 months. There are no term obligations, and members can cancel anytime without penalty.
If you wish, send me your shipping address and I'll send the current issue. Also, if there any additional questions, call me anytime at (321) 264-1465.

Thank you.

Bill Davidson"

Sorry guys, I meant $36 EVERY 6 MONTHS not every month. It works out as $6 every 5 weeks, and each 90minute DVD is still only $6. the catch is that you have to subscribe for 6 issues at $36 in total. But lets face it... $36 ain't gonna buy you many sets of strings, so if the quality is as good as is said, it might still be worth a try.

Ask if he has signed releases or on-camera permission from the artists involved, their agents or the concert promoters. Otherwise, one is supporting an unworthy "documentary".

This is a difficult subject, I know. And I would guess that the guy has no permission at all to make these "documentaries". Although at $6 (£3.50) per DVD, when you include the cost of the blank disks and the postage, I can safely say that he's probably not making much (if any) profit from them. I think the guy is just an honest flamenco fan who wants to share his passion with other people who can't make it to Spain themselves. I'm not sure whether to hold the whole copyright issue against him or just appreciate the fact that I can experience a part of the Jerez festival for just $6. I recently purchased a great DVD of a 1980s PDL/McLaughin/DiMeola concert, and I knew it wasn't a legitimate production. But when there is no legitimate version available, do you reject it and miss out, or just turn a blind eye?

Very good point James.

Concert organizers/artists/agents should think about this.

I didn't dare to ask the guy if he had permission to film. But I suspect he hasn't. Me and a couple of other members are considering signing up on a trial basis, but he's being a bit vague about how to unsubscribe, so I'm thinking about it carefully first.

If its everything he says it is, it would be worth the money.
