I saw these two performers together at the Bienal 2002 in Seville, and they were wonderful together...so much so, that I would recommend this show sight unseen or unheard!
I don't know the schedule of performances and venues, but I would think it is possible to glean that from a Google search.
I'm wondering if Estela has seen these two perform together, and what her impressions are? They performed at Teatro De Maistranza last Spetember.

Paul, it's very hard for me to comment on Gerardo and Carmen. Gerardo, because the two times I've seen him I was very unhappy with the extreme jazz/avant-garde/experimental nature of his music. Carmen is a friend of thirty years, we worked together in 1973 and share quick visits when we turn up at the same flamenco events. She is a friend but not my favorite singer. I heard the sample clips of her last record which was with Gerardo and it was extremely disheartening.
Off-the-record, two great musicians who make music I don't care for, strictly a personal opinion and something I would never put in a review. Since you obviously enjoy them, could you explain what you like about their work?

Now you put me on the spot, but I will try to answer your question as honestly and humbly as I can. Carmen Linares was the first canteora I ever saw perform live, and she was accompanied by Monolo San Lucar. I think that show moved me so much that I just began to like her style. To me, she seems to be a traditional style singer who is not afraid to stretch into more modern musical interpretations of the palos. As far as Gerardo Nunez is concerned, I think he is a very accomplished and polished musician and composer. Although, there are times when I totally do not understand his music. I think this is because it is not recognizable as the traditional flamenco that I am learning to play and enjoy listening to.
But when I saw Carmen and Gerardo perform together, I COULD recognize the palos, and I began to feel where they were taking the music. It felt like flamenco music (to me anyway). Here, in the USA where I live, I do not get the opportunity to stumble into a juerga and enjoy the feel of the origional spirit of the song and dance. I also do not spend enough time in Spain to know the tradition and evolution of Flamenco puro. And, therefore, I have no credible opinion as to whether Gerardo and Carmen are Top level flamenco artists. I do know that I enjoy their musical chemistry very much, and to me it sounds very much Flamenco.

Paul, thank you for taking the time to explain this. Personal taste apart, I think we all remain attached to flamenco via the artists who caused us to become enthralled with the art the first time.
