New here & to Flamenco

Hi all, I've been playing classical guitar for about 18months and finally worked up the courage to try flamenco. I've just bought the Gerahard Graf-Martinez' Vol1 DVD & Book can anyone recommend any other good books of DVD's that might help me.

My guitar tutor recommended Juan Martin I'll look out for his DVD, Nope I wish I was in Melbourne this is Andy in the wet cold UK

I just started flamenco after a few years of classical too, you have come to the right place.

I think that Juan Martin Solos Flamencos V. 1 (grades 0-5) complements the Graf-Martinez flamenco Guitar Vol 1 very well. The latter covering just a few palos, but emphasizing technique, while the former covering more palos/solos and less technique.

I'm looking foward to purchasing the follow-ups to these great learning tools, but they'll have to wait for now. I should be receiving Gerhard's Rumbas Flamencas DVD/CD-ROM in the next couple of days. Rumba has been my favorite palo for so long now, but I have to admit that I'm growing fond of quite a few different palos. Once you hear yourself at least half way in compas with an alegrias (in my case), it's just really a cool thing.

Sorry Andy i confused you with someone i meet in melbourne, welcome to the forum

I think for starters the most well put togheder is the Juan martin stuff , he introduces the different techniques as it comes up in different palos.

And for each palo hes got the most traditional and well reconised falseta, thats another plus, u can play the tarantos escobilla just like in the book in 20 years from now it will still be the typical most well known falseta, also alows room as you get more advanced to jazz it up etc.

all and all its a greate strong base to start from.

Andy I guess it is not that near but within range, El Ted posts dates here for events - penas in Hull and Leeds (and one or two other locations I´m not sure of). Might be worth having a chat with him if you want to experience some flamenco and fun. If you look under events you will find him.
