Another useful phrase I learnt due to the amount of buskers and beggars we get here in the summer was " Dejame en paz" leave me in peace. It works well.

I think we should start a Spanish language thread for learning useful phrases and translating letras ( lyrics). JAMES can post excerts from his flamenco book when he gets hold of it.

People's exeriences with languages are so funny. Once when I was being thrown out of a swimming pool ( no not fighting but I wasn't wearing flip flops). The man was shouting at me and I said " Vale vale estoy salida" I wanted to say " ok ok I'm leaving " but in fact said " OK ok I' m horny" and another time I told a friends mother I had heard about her wonderful penis, the classic mix up of pollo ( chicken) and polla (penis).

Kate, thats an excellent idea... when I first visited this foro I had no idea even what the words compas, palmas, etc. meant! It wasn't until I got my Graf Martinez tuition book that I discovered a useful section in the back that acts as a mini phrase book. It only covers the basics of Flamenco and isn't very modern, but I still found it very helpful, and I'm sure others would too.
The Manolo Sanlucar book is prooving quite difficult to find, as I suspect it is unavailable outside of Spain, and only available through selected outlets within Spain. Time to ask some of my old Spanish contacts for a favour I think.

What you are saying there, Kate, reminds me of post wartime Glasgow, where everybody had to work together and everybody kept an eye out for their neighbour and what problems he or she were encountering, as things were hard to come by and folk had empathy about how other people lived.
Personally, I think the same sort of sentiment lies at the heart of Flamenco.
The more you get away from that, the less Flamenco it becomes IMO.

As for where to search for it in Madrid, I have absolutely no idea

Perhaps it is the sort of thing that a specialist Flamenco guitar shop might stock.

The first thing that comes to mind, is that toilet = servicios. In the States, we are taught to use "bano" (bath). But the Spaniards we ran into didn't know what we were talking about.

It's very interesting to me how so many people run into helpful Spaniards. To tell you the truth, I speak Spanish to a moderate degree but didn't get any help from the natives. I used to work in restaurants a lot and I always enjoyed hanging out in the kitchen with the Mexican guys and learning from them. And they always liked me and appreciated the fact that I was trying to communicate to them in their own language.

But in Spain, from Madrid to Barcelona to Sevilla, I got the "French" treatment, where if you didn't know the words exactly, you got blank stares. This was in great contrast to Mexico, where they would gladly attempt to follow my pantomime. Maybe it was because it was around the wartime and I'm American, but I really didn't find the Spanish very helpful or nice at all. The nicest person I met in Andalucia was Kate!

Miguel in recent years there has been an anti US thing here in Spain. I´m in a dormitory town of Madrid where there used to be a US airbase. Can´t say they are missed. But at a one on one level I have found many Spaniards going overboard to help me. And at a business level I visited Spain with a US colleague in the 80s and we were always very well received both socially and formally despite my less than 100 words. Guess it depends on where and when and whether its raining or not. Just wouldnt want anyone put off. That said I guess if you compare everyone with a flamenca like Kate you are going to be more dissappointed than not

Though it does surprise me that you did not meet friendly Spanish people especially as you speak Spanish and play the guitar and had a beautiful girl by your side. perhpas they were jealous.

James no luck so far but the search goes on. I have not made it to El Flamenco Vive yet but hold out little hope. On the web they offer over 140 DVD-books but of course the one you want is not there.

Anyway got myself 19 tracks of Sanlucar for less than 7 Es

Thanks for the update, nigel... lets hope El Flamenco Vive have it in stock. meanwhile, enjoy the Sanlucar CD- I'm slowly building up a collection of his work myself!

James it is not good news. I visited Flamenco Vive en Lemos and they said it was difficult. They showed me a typed request for a copy and offered they could add me to the list but no promises. At Flamenco world in Huertas they also confirmed they had not got it and didn´t seem to keen to try. Is the Sanlucar officially out of print I wonder? Perhaps someone here can help.

Just for info both these shops are 100% Flamenco and contain lots of materials of all types. If you visit Madrid I would recommend them above all the rest - although the Ramirez shop also had a box of mixed books-CDs-DVDs which were interesting.

I will continue to try but

Nigel, I must sincerely thank you for your efforts so far! You've been great!

I was under the impression that the book was fairly new, as another member "Leo" purchased a copy at a recent Flamenco guitar festival. I would attempt to contact Manolo (or his associates) directly through his website ( www.manolosanlucar.com ), but it seems that the "contact us" page isn't working. Perhaps its just my computer, but I suspect its just because the website isn't fully operational yet.
All things considered, I think perhaps the only way of obtaining this book would be through someone who has a direct link with Manolo (or his associates), or by asking one of these specialist shops to try and order it. If some shops seem reluctant to order it, then there's nothing I can say to that.

Likewise, if you (Nigel) feel you have done your bit and can't be bothered to search any further, I'll completely understand.
What I would ask, though, is that anyone going to any Flamenco festivals and events could *please* keep an eye out for it, and perhaps even buy a copy to sell on to me. Or, failing that, if someone has copy already that they have read, and wouldn't mind passing on (obviously I'll pay for it)... please let me know.

Now that I think of it... maybe I'll ask Leo if he'll sell me his when he's done with it!

James these places may not stock everything but they are real treasure troves and the guys (didnt meet any galls) chat about flamenco. I have already spent over 100 Es but have lots of CDs and materials that will keep me happy for years. Its no effort I can assure you. I return on Monday so will send you an update then by email.

Just an observation the visitors book in flamengo world had 5 Italians who had not all visited together. Is flamenco big in Italy

"FLAMENGO world"?! Is that a theme park that features Flamingos that dance to Flamenco music?

Yeah, sounds like the sort of thing the Italians would like!

Wow, 100 Euros! Well, I'm glad you got something good out of all the travelling from shop to shop. I'll await any further updates from you regarding the book, although I'm erring on the side of pessimism to avoid dissappointment...

Unfortunately (for me), Leo's book has been signed by the man himself... so he's not willing to give it up.
