Review of "Guitarras Flamencas&...

Did anyone else get the recent DVD of the XXII Certamen International de Guitarra Flamenca (just called Guitarras Flamencas) which has been on sale recently? I thought I'd offer a brief review.
The DVD is very short, as there is only one piece from each of the six finalists, but the performances are incredibaly good.
Apart from that there are performances by two local cuadros with singers and dancers; typical pena level stuff with all the good and bad that implies (the good: a great feeling of warmth and genuine flamenco spirit, the bad: out of tune guitars) and also interviews with the judges (including Gerardo Nunez and Oscar Herrero)

Anyway, back to the performances. There are two tarantas, two bulerias, a solea and a granainas. The bulerias from Severiano Jimenez and Eduardo Trassierra absolutely smoke, Severiano's in D# has a very swinging Madrid flavour while Eduardo's, also in D# but starting and ending traditionally in A, is more traditionally fiery and ends in a frenzy; he looks close to falling off the chair. Antonio Rey, the competition winner, plays a beautifull taranta with one of the nicest tremolos I've heard.

So if you don't mind the brevity of this DVD, I highly recomend it. Either of the bulerias are worth the price of this DVD on their own. The playing is cutting-edge, which won't be to everyone's taste, although there is some good traditional sounding stuff there (especially the solea) and all the performances are charged with emotion and honesty.
