Length for Pegs 

What do the luthiers consider a a good length for pegs?

viola pegs come in lengths around 80mm from tip to top of the head. i measured my guitar which has a 21mm thick head and the shaft extends 8mm above the front of the head plate. i have enough space to wind the string without the string rubbing on the head plate. i would imagine there is 1-2mm variation in head thickness/length and/or the shaft extending above the front.

now for the caveats: caveat #1, some people like a shorter length and they cut the shaft to length. this is a personal thing. pegheads by the way or shorter and extend less on the backside of the head. caveat #2 some cases will not accept long pegs so either the case needs to be changed or the shafts need to be shorter.
