Hello, I'm new to the forum. I'm a complete beginner and enthusiast of Flamenco music.
The deal is, I have a Yamaha CG172SF Flamenco Guitar, and I was going to replace the strings and decided on the "D'Addario Pro Arte EJ25B" composites for Flamenco Guitars. The 6th E string however has a "softer/thinner" section at one of the ends. Now, as I understand this is done intentionally by D'Addario to allow for an easier knot, to relieve initial tension, and as a general locking feature.
My question is, should I use this arguably thinner, more fragile section of the string as intended and tie it up? or, Should I cut this part off and use the normal wound part at the bridge? My concern is twofold, tone and longevity. I'm afraid that, since it is thinner and appears more fragile, it will snap or maybe even unravel itself from the its core. I tried to research this further, but was unable to find any useful information on this. I'm hoping some of you here have seen this and have perhaps some experience with these type of strings.

Yes - the string is no more fragile nor thinner, just the windings are less tight to allow more flexibility. I've re-strung many times using D'Addario strings and haven't had an issue with this.

you could use it, but as the bottom E string is usually much longer than it needs to be you can cut that bit off and still have more than enough string.

The correct answer is that you should not use those strings in the first place. The D'Addario composite strings are positively dreadful strings. Try a set of La Bella 820B for the Yamaha 172SF.

Don't worry about it, either end ties fine. And don't cut them, roll them up at one end as when they go "dead" you can reuse the slack by re-tying them with a few centimeters slid back. THey sound like new for a day or so.

Composites dreadful... Well, I've tried the EJ25B's and what I didn't like were the trebles, and the generally too low tension - especially for flamenco. The basses' sound is my least concern with these. On the whole, I agree this is not a great set.
If you'd be sticking to D'Addario, I'd try the Dynacore Titaniums in high - or even extra high - tension, work great on my Saez - but are too bright on both my classicals.
