Your musical interest apart from Fla...

It seems to me that Flamenco attracts people from all kinds of music genres. So this makes me wonder about the background of the foro members!

My main sources of musical inspiration are:
- Techno/tech-house/minimal (for example: Ricardo Villalobos, Plastikman, Minilogue)
- Dub techno (for example: Monolake, Rhythm & Sound)
- Jazz, Gypsy Jazz (Django of course)
- Early 20th century Blues
- Reggae, dub

I listen to just about everything pop, rock, metal and classical. I enjoy the occasional rap or r&b tune as well.

Oh goodness. someone had to ask this - and I had to answer - anyhow I blame the Tempranillo: my background is solid rock, 70's guitar heroes, 80's big hair guitar busters, 70's funk, fusion, all blues & some jazz from the beginning through ... I guess through "today", mainly the same old influences from Jimi Hendrix/Frank Marino/Van Halen/Duane Allman/Warren Haynes/Al Di Meola/John McLaughlin/Steve Stevens/Johnny Winter/Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee/Memphis Slim/Dr. John and so many others that I barely dare to thank for I am just a speck of dust in their giant footstep.

Thanks!

Well said, Erik.

Life seems too short to fully appreciate all the incredible music we have available! I was raised on my Dad's huge vinyl collection, and still remember sitting on the floor in his home office in my robe at like 10 years old or younger while he spun Bob Marley, Allman Brothers, Miles Davis etc. He pulled me out of bed at 2am one time to watch the Allman Brothers at Beacon Theatre on tv. Great memories - I owe him a lot for all the stuff he introduced me to. I still remember him showing me a copy of Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas Flood album - I took one look and was like ehhhh I don't know Dad - Stevie turned out to be one of my biggest musical influences.

I'm fortunate to be able to listen to music all day at work, so I use that time to catch up on my listening.

i prefer classic rock, jazz and bossa nova...
i grew up on GnR, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, i love Yamandu Costa, i would love to play jazz, but i know i won't ever be able to...
but to be honest i don't listen to anything other than flamenco...
i play in a pop band too so we play contemporary and classic pop-rock music, so it satisfies my "other music" needs on a weekly basis...

Everything from country to jazz to rap to pop to opera to flamenco to classical to ... you can pretty much name it.

I tend to prefer the Indie bands coming out of the US and Canada the past ten years or so. That and 80s Post-punk / New Wave, I guess.

I also enjoy the company of some local musicians
We get together once or twice a week to learn covers.
or to record songs we write or even just to jam.

RE: Your musical interest apart from... (in reply to Flamencito

Other than Flamenco I like to listen to most genres of music, if the music is well done it is good in my book and I do try to seek out as many kinds of music as possible to find new ways of expressing things. I do tend to listen to romantic era music, I love Chopin with a passion for example, but I also really like bands like Soundgarden, The Black Dahlia Murder, Dimmu Borgir, Ulver, Saetia, Sunny Day Real Estate and stuff.

I have played in a few bands and played Grunge, Melodic Death metal, and what most seem to call post-hardcore these days.

I played rythm guitar and sang/screamed

Some of my biggest influences though, are : Tom Waits, Skip James, Serj Tankian, From first to last( Heroine album with Sonny Moore as a vocalist, who has now gone on to be known as Skrillex, he really has a really nice voice.

I do sing quite a bit, my voice was sort of my primary intstrument, but as with all things I do I became handicapped in that department and got vocal chord nodes and polyps.
And I do play the piano, but my finger and hand problems are an even greater handicap there than on the guitar.
For electronic music I use ableton live and make random stuff once in a while.
And as a child I learned to play the zither and the hardingfele from a relative, though I am far from a virtuoso I do like Norwegian music alot.

Oh and Led Zeppelin and Kansas are like obviously in there for most but yeah, needs a mention.

A lot more people like that then flamenco, in the US at least, it is kind of a sad time for music, has been for the last......20 years or so. I feel like it's going to get better though with the independent labels gaining momentum and people being able to self produce some good has to come of that.

Music can be two things... art and/or money.

When it is based on money & publicity, the target audience is people who arent really aprecciating music as an art.

When music is being made for the sake of art and you have so much independent stuff being made, it gets REALLY hard to weed out all the crap... and I mean, there's LOTS OF CRAP out there.

Think about painting and sculpture.. does anyone really gets into those arts to become a pop star?

Just the other day, god knows how (btw there is no god), i ACCIDENTIALLY came accross what seems to be the new video by Britney Spears. Now, i am not one of those Britney- or Pop-Bashers. There is for sure some "pop" music that i find very inspiring and to which, for example, mediocre flamenco doesnt even come close to. But that song was so... bad. Here is the lyrics:

When your hear us in the club
You gotta turn the **** up
You gotta turn the **** up
You gotta turn the **** up

When we up in the club
All eyes on us
All eyes on us
All eyes on us

See the boys in the club
They watching us
They watching us
They watching us

Everybody in the club
All eyes on us
All eyes on us
All eyes on us

Overall i have to disagree with the degrading of music. There is no month where i dont get completely flashed by at least one track. Often it is electronic stuff (Blackmill is just awesome). But it can be classical as well or even a movie score.

Its funny to see "myself" 3 yrs ago. How i was obsessed with flamenco and how today its almost completely gone. I can even name the exact turning point. I was doing an internship and the workers there had always had a radio on which was playing mostly pop music of course. More often than not i would think: "thats actually not that bad".

It does get hard to weed out the crap but I prefer that to one big label forcing whatever the flavor of the month is down everyone's throats. I've always listened to sub-culture type music so I've always had to search out the artists I like, it's never been handed to me by a radio station and I like that. I think if more people did that the world would be a more interesting place musically. Unless you grew up in Jerez you've all had to do this with flamenco on one level or another.

Anyways back to my jam "When we up in the club, all eyes on us all eyes on us....."

It is a sign of how much "dumbing down" has occurred in labels today that rap is even considered music in some circles.

The problem with the crap is that a few decades ago you would have underground records/bands but they would have to have some talent and commitment to their art because it was expensive to record, you really had to go to a studio and pay for it.

Nowadays you only need a microphone, computer and internet connection. The problem is that everyone is an artist and more often then not these "artists" measure themselves by the "how much do I sound exactly like my idol" standard.

In the end you get huge amounts of:

a) a watered down copy of some established artist

b) immature/pretentious sounding crap

All we really wanted was a bit of "c)"

I totally agree with you, but for me I'll take that over over produced, over marketed, over glamorized, cram it down your throat bullsh**.
Did you ever see the southpark where they have to vote for the school mascot and it's between a giant douche and a turd sandwich? It's like that, the lesser of two evils.
