Tangos Construction Kit

Hello,

I am currently thinking about producing a Solo Compás CD with a slightly different approach to
all those Compas CD’s already out there and would therefor appreciate your feedback, suggestions and reviews…
My idea would be to not only offer ready-made loops but complete construction kits, similar to drumloop- sampling cd’s.
That means the user has access to all the individual files that are used in a loop.
By stacking these individual perc-tracks in a DAW or for instance Sony’s Acid looping software,
Everyone would have the chance to rearrange the loops according to personal preference and needs

What do you think ?
Here is a demo track, a Tangos @ 90 bpm.
The complete loop is made up of 10 individual tracks: Bendir, Djembe, Palmas finas and sordas,
Cajón ( which in fact is a brush snare) , Tinaja and some Percusión menor
I packed the construction kit as a winrar archive and uploaded it to my dropbox.
download complete kit

You can use this demo track without any restrictions as often as you want
I would however be happy about a little hint if you do so

Thomas

Sounds like a good principle.

You could also make loops variations. I guess it would be easier to those not so well-versed with daws and multi-tracking.

This way it would be like playing with Legos.

I love the idea!

To be able to stop, modify and swing in the groove to suit the tune would be very useful.

Your grooves are really great! I have been playing along and recording some ideas with them tonight. Thanks again for sharing them. One needs expensive equipment and real skill to get them sounding so good. So for you to share them for free is very kind.

Aside from the standard cajon and palmas focused loops, I believe "flamenco palo" loops that feature different percussion instruments would also sell well. Like tabla loops for buleria or a djeme loop in 3/4 etc.. Your solution of being able to drop out layers and instruments will achieve this. Great!

I also believe grooving drum samples following flamenco forms would also sell well. Something that could offer similar backing to the style Vicente uses in many of his recordings. I have listened to a couple of solo compas drum cd's that are available on itunes. They are called flamenco bateria or something? but they didn't sound very good at all imo.

Thanks very much for your detailed and helpful feedback, KMMI77 .

I actually plan to offer some other instruments besides the trad. flamenco perc sounds like framedrums, tablas, pandeiros etc.
Im not sure about drums though....a brushed snare here and there is ok for me, but normally I do not dig drumsets in flamenco...beyond that one has to be a skillful drummer to do that, and I really suck on drums ..

Great stuff, thanks a lot. If you were to put out a few of these kits for different palos with different instruments, variations etc. at 2-3 different speeds for a reasonable price I'm sure there'd be a lot of people happy to buy them, including me.

nice loops , I normally use loops in a programme called :MakingWaves; with this programme you can have different layers and control them individually , or make them into a song with parts ,
Also with one loop you can speed it up or slow it down and change the pitch ..

If you know this programme

your loops fit them very well

Thanks for writing, guys !

Kiko,

my loops all have embeded tempo definition and time signatures in the file header...
So, within a decent app like yours or similar ones it is for instance quite easy to even do accelerandos or ritardandos ...
Good to hear, that the files obviously work well in MakingWaves

OMg ...as they say ... I just spotted who you are and what you do ...Thomas .....thinking about how good the loops were ... and that something pro .. was going on here ..

and then i looked at your profile and thought.....why do I know that name ?/??/..

then tonight ,(Sat ) in my usual drunken stupor ,....i could see clearly that you were the sound Tech for the clip i stole just last week or so of John Amir Haddad and posted here ..

http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=156803&appid=&p=&mpage=53&key=&tmode=&smode=&s=#221966

well there you go . , how embarassing is that ... ,,

Now everything is becoming clearer ,(eXcept my playing ,) ....cool that you were actually there to see the real thing happen and record it....I take my hat off to you ...

Hey Kiko, that's how the cookie crumbles ....
but seriously: there's no reason to feel embarrassed...
I tend to be too reluctant to do a proper self promotion.

Relating to Amir, perhaps you did miss this:
http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=212095&p=1&tmode=1&smode=1

I recorded this upcoming release of his, as well as his first CD, some CD's of Pepe Justicia, who's music can be found on iTunes...Mariano Martín, Agustín de la Fuente etc...

I am also the sound tech behind these vids:

we should get you to do a short thread for us all on how to get some kind of reasonable sound for you tube clips with the usual cheap equipment that most of us have .....

the guys with the more professional mics etc , tend to know how to use them ...

but with the lower end stuff i'm sure with a little bit of advice they could be cleaned up a bit..........

hmmm...yet another tutorial about recording with cheap mics, I don't know

If one wants to seriously learn cooking one has access to thousands of cockery books out there...
youtube itself is drowned with recording tutorials of all kinds, I guess noone needs yet another wisenheimer's treatise on this issue

Graf Martinez already offers something like that but it seems fairly basic still and the samples aren't that great and sound quite artificial in a compás context, more like a drum machine. I think short, re-combinable loop slices are the way to go for flamenco, I just don't think the subtle things like slightly offset palmas can be replicated well with triggering single samples, but what do I know.

In fact they can with multi layered samples. Each sample would have a different dynamic intensity for each velocity level and at each level there would be like 3 different samples in a round robin fashion for instance.

There might be already some soundfonts libraries around and Iam sure there are a few cajon VSTi's but I dont recall having heard of a full flamenco library.
