Does anyone have experience how to make a PC silent? In my PC it is not so much the Fans itself, i turned most of them off and it didnt make a diffference. It is more the vibrations in the tower itself that are causing the noise. Its really loud actually. The vibration has a cycle of 2 seconds, in which the volume goes up and down. I can also feel it by touching any part of the tower.
Ok, you need to buy a case that is designed for quiet computing. Get a quiet power supply, and suspend your hard drives - the case will usually have the stuff to do it. I have done it and I can barely hear my computer, I have to listen to hear it.
In short, a new case (look at anitec) and efficient and quite power supply.
its very hard to escape them, they're everywhere. But im not a huge apple fan and usually look closely on the price/value ratio. This is also why i wouldnt buy a notebook you basically pay double the price for half of the performance of a desktop IMO
@cathulu: so you say that the case is important? Suspending the hard drives, i think Win 7 does this automatically, because it is quiet most of the time until i have to access a drive.
@Arash: my findings so far are PC case ~ 100 Euro quiet power supply ~ 100 Euro silencer for drives & fans ~ 10-20 Euro buying a used ready to go silenced PC ~ 300-400 Euro
As always im a bit overwhelmed and dont know what to do without spending lots of €. Maybe just buying a case and some silencers for drives and try if it solves the vibration problems? If not buy new power supply.
PS: ive read suspending drives affects their durability.

Well of course it depend on your needs, but take under account that a laptop already has a screen and that you can take it with you everywhere. If you don't mind being tied to your desk that's fine (I have a desktop), but if you like to take your computer and work (or play) somewhere else like a cafe...
Sorry, suspending the hard drive meant attaching it with elastomers or a rubber suspension system to decouple it from the case.
Think of a new quiet computing case and power supply as an investment that you can use again when you upgrade. Mine has already seen two motherboards.
I presume your power supply is what came with the case, the whole deal was cheap and reflects the noise problems etc. A friend bought an expensive case, but that was all aluminum and it was a jet engine for noise. So throwing money at it is not the solution, you must be judicious. A good website in english is silentpcreview.com
