Conde Hermanos Estudio for evaluation

My son bought this guitar from his teacher in the early 1970s. He would like to sell it now. It is beautiful in my opinion but the wood is laminated and the one store that looked at it said it was probably built by copiers. They behaved as if I was a fraud. I would like to help my son who is working to finish his medical training.

I would appreciate any information you can give me. I've attached a picture of the label.

Labels with the Gravina and Atocha addresses on were used during the 60’s and 70’s, mainly on the guitars of lesser quality. “Guitarra de Estudio” probably means “we didn’t make this guitar and we didn’t commission some other luthiers to make it to our general design so that we could pretend we made it – we just bought it in and sold it on”.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that they just might have bought it in from a impecunious talented young luthier and it could be a nice guitar. If you are unable to tell whether this is a good guitar find an experienced player to advise you. Dealers and potential purchasers might use the label to justify offering very little. If you know or have strong evidence that the guitar is better than the label implies, stick to your guns and see if you can get a good price.
Good luck!

Thanks for your prompt responses. I offered it on eBay for $300 and it was snapped up overnight. Maybe I could have got more but I think I did pretty well. I hope the buyer is happy with it.

Hy npatton

The guitar on the pic looks horrible. A cheap guitar made in Paracho looks better than this one. O.k. don't know how it sounds, but the ones i have tried in the Gravina Shop in Madrid sounded as bad as the soundbox of this one looks.

There was an old lady and an old man in the Gravina Shop. It didn't seem to me that they really knew a lot about guitars. To me it seemed as she was just running a business that wasn't running that good as it obviously should. I was there to check out some of their guitars last year. All of the guitars they had in the shop where totally out of tune. I had to tune them all before i was able to play them. From all the guitars i have checked out i wouldn't want to buy one for the price she asked (1800 til 2500 Euros). When she realized that i'm not going to buy a guitar, she refused to talk to me any longer.
I know that some Guitarists including relatively famous ones, swear on some Gravina guitars, but i actually never came across a really good one.

For me it seemed that this guitars are made somewhere by someone, who knows it?

I definitely received another treatment in the Ramirez store. Very kind salesperson and a very charming shop in the center of Madrid. The guitars i've seen there had all an excellent sound, even the student models, allthough i think they were somewhat more expencive than the Gravina ones, but who cares. If you receive a nice treatment and a good service as a customer, you are rather more willing to pay a higher price, because you feel welcome and the quality of the instrument is worthwile it's price.

Best regards

Armando
