Was wondering if anyone else is/was using the Hal Leonard Flamenco book to begin learning from? Seems like it will be pretty good for the first few months. Then I'm planning on signing up for Jayson Mcguire's online course.

Hello My girlfriend has this book. The techniques in it are OK, picado, tremolo, alzapua, to name but a few. The pieces in the book are not really flamenco but are good ways to practice the techniques mentioned earlier. If you want to learn by a book to get started, Juan Martin has some really good beginner books that would be alot better than the leonard book. The martin books also have a dvd that goes along. I have the red and the green Martin books. You can find them on Amazon or any other shopping site. John

The Juan martin books recommended are excellent. While not officially instructional, there are pieces where he does almost every technique slowly so you can learn from the books and DVD alone. (Lots of slow rasgueado to view in most of the grades (such as solea in level 3 of the green book), slow picado in various pieces , and in the 2nd volume, in the sabicas bulerias in level 6 he shows alzapua slowly for a second) Only thing I think not ever done slowly in the DVDs is tremolo.

thanks gaash and RTC. I want to try and get through the Hal Leonard-should be done it in a month. I'll start looking for the ones mentioned. Rasgueado is tough-part of my ring finger nail gave up the ghost while practicing it-there one minute gone the next! I finally got some new strings to put on the Yamaha-trying out light gauge Daddarios-I think the strings on the guitar are installed in china, and have probably lost a lot of vibrance in the shipping....

JM earlier book 'El Arte Flamenco de la Guitarra' is in my opinion a better starting point than his later books. Mainly because in this book there is a lot more explanatatory material, and on the accompanying cd his plays at both normal and more importantly slow speed, so yuo can pick up what is going on.
