Newb question here I'm afraid...if any one could spare a mo.... I've been practising solea por bulerais recently and not sure of best way to tap the foot. I've tried two different ways: one where I group the 12 beats into four groups of three and tap on the first beat of each group 1, 4, 7, 10 and feel the 3 6 8....12 accents as kind of upbeats. The other way I've tried is to just tap on the accents 3, 6, 8, 10, 12.
Interestingly each method seems to give the music a different feel ...the first method I think has the danger of making it feel more like a waltz. The second method of tapping the accents is a bit harder and probably better to practice

12-3-6-8-10 is the way to go...i don't think it's a good idea to flirt with anything else unless you're really confident of the compás...of course your first variation is valid also, but mostly in certain dance situations...

Thanks for the replies. Interesting that both of you wrote the accents counting from 12, the same as modern bulerias as I understand it. When playing bulerias compass I tap my foot on 12, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10....and kind of feel/ think of the compass patterns starting from 12, but with solea por bulerias I feel/think of the compass patterns starting from 1. Anyway, suppose I just need to play lots and internalise the rhythm...

i think the 7-8 accents are for more advanced players, plus they don't work in every situation... 12 is a pivot point, thinking from 1 is not a good idea imo...for example if anything i play starts from 1, i still mark the 12 with a golpe or at least with my foot...

I don't want to get into why I think tapping on the accents is wrong (but I will if you ask) but here's my method of counting all those hemiola rhythms -
Tap your foot on the numbers but accent the emboldened parts:
