Any thoughts on which is the best ever submarine movie?
U-570 should get an automatic disqualification for portraying that the Americans stole the Enigma machine instead of the British...especially when the movie claims to be based on a true story. My favourite is still "Das Boot". During the 3 and a half hours or so you really feel a part of the crew and the sense of claustrophobia is really intense. Annoyingly the DVD has moderated the gritty language of the crew whereas the original video has a literal translation of the script. I think it must have been a terrifying experience for anyone to be in a submarine under such conditions.

Or just because Bon Jovi was in it.
I have to go with Das Boot. This movie was ahead of its time.
Das Boot, hands down for me. It just captures the feeling of the average man during the insanity of war and how they coped with it. The tension is unbelievable, you almost feel claustrophobic just watching the film. Sig--
So your vote for best submarine movie is "one million years BC"?
I think Hollywood should make a submarine movie with Scarlett Johansen as a Eco friendly sub captain who caps burst underwater oil spills and powers a high tec submarine in a latex diving suit......that would definitely attract an audience. She would have to have the sub go wrong and then face certain death before restarting everything and saving the world from ecological catastrophy.

I did 5 years in the US Navy, 4 of those on submarine as a sonarman. I miss the liberty ports but I don't miss much else.
Oh yea, and Down Periscope is the best movie, but only because of this:
Just kidding, that movie is pure s--t. I've never seen Das Boot in it's entirety though, but I've got it on my computer so I think I'll watch it tonight.
