i'm going to be on tv!

well, it's only local tv for a nearby town. i dont have all the details yet but we're going in to record on friday. it's going to be in the morning which is going to weird because i'll barely be awake and i won't have a beer in me yet to help me play better.

anyways, i just wanted to share this with you guys in hopes of getting some support and to get some advice, like "your loins are going to aching!" because that seriously boosted my confidence last time!

Hey Leo. Tell us about all about the experience after friday. What are you doing, a solo or something with a dancer? My experience has been that most TV sound guys don't know how to mic a spanish guitar. Bring your own mic or a semi acoustic guitar. Other than that be patient. Usually its a lot of waiting around for technical guys to get stuff ready and then you will only have 1 (or 2 if you are lucky) takes to perform. Be prepared for the fact that you may only get one take at it! P

RE: i'm going to be on tv! (in reply to at_leo_87

thanks guys!

well, they emailed our dancer and said they wanted a 40 minute show, that included interviews. we figured we could two dance numbers and a solo guitar piece. i'm playing one dance piece (alegrias) and the other guitarist will play the other (solea por bulerias) while i play cajon. then if time permits, i can play my solo piece. i intend to play the one i wrote for the challenge.

thanks for the tips, pim! i will now bring every mic i have with me, just in case. it'd be nice to get some reverb but i doubt they can do that. i might have to be amped too, i have no idea.

i also have to make the dance floor and bring it in. because apparently, what they have is not suitable.

that's all i know so far! i think we get a hard copy after but i'm not sure if it can go on the internet or not.

stu, i can't have a beer because it'll be 10 in the morning! oh wait, or can i? your simply phrased question has shattered my socially conditioned idea of when it's appropriate to start drinking. or maybe i should just stay up all night and party. that way, i know i'll be warmed up.

Make a compas clock in the dancefloor from soundports and put a lights in it which lit on accent
I'm sure there's a huge request for those dancefloors $$$$

EDIT
Hmmm just thinking about it...twelve leds around the soundport...programmable...it sure keeps you in compas (espacially with xmas )

mmmm.... eggs, toast and corona! or maybe just some vodka in my orange juice, that's not too far of a stretch.

LOL. it'll look kind of like a disco floor. i think it would give people seizures. lol! well, as long as they convulse in compas.

RE: i'm going to be on tv! (in reply to at_leo_87

I have played once for the greek national tv at appr. 14:00, when many people check the shows on tv. The show i played in was the most popular of it's day (i was 18 at the time).

I played the Tango en Skai by Roland Dyens.
I am VERY happy with the result for the following reasons:
1) I knew it about a month before
2) I was at the moment obsessed with the piece i would play
3) I practiced really hard on it
4) When you play on TV you are not anxious at all. It is just you and 5 or 6 people around which helps enormously => no stage stress at all
5) It went perfectly for my standards, really didn't miss a single note, and fast!

The best of me so far. I even got 3 or 4 people recognising me in the street the following days

I am completely positive you will do GREAT.
You are lucky to have this chance, give it your best shot, it is a very good experience.

Yes, record it so we can all watch it! You will be fabulous darling!

PS I am also making a dance floor for my wife. I got some faux maple Ikea flooring last weekend and I am going to cover a 4x4 sheet of plywood with it so she can practice footwork. But I may try and get something more like 4 x 5 feet or even try and make something 5x5. I think I will add a couple of soundports to use as hand holds!

What is your floor going to be?

graham, it might be put on their website but i don't know yet. either way, i will try to share somehow or another. sharing is caring!

stratos, thanks for sharing your story. i'm inspired. i am totally ready to become famous and get invited to celebrity cocaine sex parties.

nice quotes flybynight. makes me feel like an alcoholic though.

i will stick to oj, minord. thanks for snapping me out of it. i don't want to get drunk and throw my guitar somewhere it doesn't belong!

chris, i made mine out of some nice figured pine. there's a more specific name but i forgot what it is. it's half inch thick and 4x6. i think 4x3 is plenty for practice. i cut it in half down the length for portability. i attached it using hinges. but i think industrial strength velcro would work better. it's LOUD!

***now this is important! i bought shock absorbing rubber material from a fitness store and attached it to the bottom. they come in puzzle like pieces. it was 15 bucks. you should definitely think about using these if you don't want your wife to hurt her knees. i used half inch wood, but i think quarter inch would be fine. it'd be easier on the knees.

wanna share pics of our handy work when you're done?

RE: i'm going to be on tv! (in reply to at_leo_87

well, i just got home. what a day! it went well and it was a really cool experience.

the sound was surprisingly good. the room was really "live" so i dont think i need any reverb added.

i messed up a couple of parts during the alegrias dance. i hit a few wrong notes in the escobilla out of all places! and the close at the end was a little sloppy.

my solo piece went pretty well. when i was practicing, for some strange reason, i was worried about this one rasgueado section that i never mess up. it was completely irrational. then when we recorded it, i messed up! that just goes to show you the power of negative/positive thinking.

i also got to test run my dance floor which worked out great! it was so loud, it didn't needed to be miced, it just bled into the microphones for the guitar and palmas.

At-Leo, Are they going to televise your solo and alegrias as complete tunes or are they just going to edit and show a few bits?

Don't worry about a few mistakes. Everyone makes them and most people won't know the difference. I am happy for you man. Nice work!!

i'm assuming they are. it's supposed to be a 40 minute show so there should plenty of time. i won't really find out until i get a copy.

Yeah that happens to me too! When I'm running through a piece before a performance I'll suddenly lose confidence about a bit that's not usually a problem, and that sort of makes it into a problem

There sure is a lot of psychology in the art of performing.

Glad it went well for you.

thanks ailsa!

i guess part of the game is to develop the discipline to always think positive. i find that's harder than just playing the damn song!
i've read that you shouldn't play the piece on the same day of the performance. i guess that makes sense. but who can resist?

Congratulations!
Everytime you do a thing like this you will level up confidence and get more and more relaxed in perfomance situations. I need to work more on this aspect of guitar playing too. Even with a lot of mistakes, it's still excellent just to get out there. Into the frey. :-)

thanks guys!

i really like performing now. i still get the butterflies before the performance but when i get up there it's just me vs. myself. and maybe a 3-way match with some lousy palmas.
