Brazilian Music and Guitarists

Turnermoran, who owns a Spehpen Faulk 7 string, and I have had some dialog regarding Brazilian music and guitarists. This was in the Luthier section.

Any Foro members out there who play some Brazilian material and/or enjoy Brazilian guitarists?

I have family by marriage that moved from Chile to Brazil during the Pinochet years and they have introduced me to a lot of great bossa. Aside from Antonio Calos Jobim I never remember the names but I love it all.

i love the stuff, its exciting , can be melancholic, and often complex rhythmically/tonally.

check out victor villadangos cds he is fine, marcelo kayatha, and paulo bellinati, if i can ever get a bulerias groovin' ill get back to some of that material.

Check this out.

Penezzi reminds me of Vicente Amigo in some ways.

and this guy just blows my mind.

I see some similarities in technique with some of these modern Brazilian players and todays flamencos. They way they hold the guitar and right hand positions. Any opinions on this?

yeah i see the similarities in the sound and the way they hold the instrument, meaning what everyway goes, instead of spending 1 hour doing nails, just Bite the end of em and shred!.

The music is very challegeing rhythmically as is flamenco and perhaps is as diffucult to do well.

I have some music by Bellinatti. I find him to be more on the classical side and not as dynamically exciting as some of these others. Marco Perreira is another terrific player.

I have long been a big fan of Egberto Gismonti. I enjoy playing some bossa nova myself.

I like Carlos Barbosa-Lima, who was quite popular from the '60s to the '80s, and who still performs. He combined classical with jazz and came up with some very nice Brazilian sounds on the classical guitar. I once had the honor of meeting him. Living in the Washington, DC area, I have been a flamenco guitar student of Paco de Malaga for several years. One day I entered Paco's old guitar shop and studio, the Guitar Gallery, for my lesson. Paco and Carlos were sitting there talking guitars and I joined them. We carried on for about half an hour before Carlos left and I proceeded with my lesson. It was an interesting encounter.

Raphael Rabello is perhaps a great link between brazil and and flamenco. he recorded with paco. he left this earth far to early...

yamandu is one monster of a player!!! am playing a set with him at this years adelaide international guitar festival in november...woo hoo! been practicing the set since February!!
have been involved in brazilian guitar for some time and recently made the shift to understanding fllamenco. most players of brazilian music [from the non classical tradition ie choro and samba players] use some techniques from the flamenco tradition...
