Where in Spain??
Hola amigos! I'm applying for a really exciting program; it's for American and Canadian students to teach English in Spain after graduating, run by the Spanish government. I'm at the part now where you choose your preferred region. Obviously Andalucía is at the top, but I get two more choices, one from each of these groups:
Grupo A: Aragón, Cantabria, Castilla la Mancha, Cataluña, Galicia, Islas Canarias Grupo B: Asturias, Ceuta y Melilla, Extremadura, La Rioja, Navarra, País Vasco
So far I'm thinking Cataluña and La Rioja, the former because my friend is applying there, and the latter for the wine
What advice do the folks here have? Which places are really beautiful and awesome to be? I'm going to be living and teaching there for a year. Flamenco is also an important consideration: I know there's not much outside of Andalucía, but if I could find a good teacher to study with in whatever city I'm in, that would be a help. A province where I'm more likely to find flamenco would probably be higher on my list.
I have to second what Escribano said, I'd go with Cataluña just for Barcelona alone. A second choice frankly wouldn't matter to me, because I'd be thrilled to live anywhere in Spain.
Thanks for the advice todos! Cataluña is definitely my second choice but I'm wondering (in case it gets to this) what to pick for a third choice, one of the Group B:
Asturias, Ceuta y Melilla, Extremadura, La Rioja, Navarra, País Vasco
I know Extremadura is next to Andalucía but is there much going on there? I guess from that list Asturias, La Rioja (vino!), and Navarra seem like the most attractive. Which do y'all recommend? Any flamenco?
Asturias, Ceuta y Melilla, Extremadura, La Rioja, Navarra, País Vasco
Asturias, Pais Vasco and Nevarra are on the north coast. Very green and hilly with plenty of rain. Very beautiful part of spain but perhaps not what you're looking for.
Ceuta y Melilla is on the north coast of Africa, probably more Moroccan than Spanish.
Extremadura may give you better access to Madrid for weekend trips to watch/study flamenco.
La Rioja is a lovely area. I wouldn't expect to see much in the way of flamenco in that part of Spain.
Rampart I´ve travelled most of Spain. Also the not so well known places.
Of the places you mention, Barcelona will be the only spot with some flamenco. The rest of Cataluña has no flamenco.
If you dont mind rain Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Pais Vasco and Navarra The north coast) are really beautifull places and people are very very nice. There´s some flamenco in Bilbao (Pais Vasco)
La Rioja is a bit deserted and I wouldnt go there myself
Aragon's principal city is Zaragoza which is good according to a Spanish friend. It seems to have a few flamenco classes and the flamenco shows tour all the cities anyway. A lot depends on your preference for size of town or city.
I found this page about Extremadura and there appears to be quite a few music festivals happening there. I have always wanted to go to Womad in Caceres.
