reyes heelblock width

On the Reyes plan by T.Blackshear, the heelblock width (were the SB attaches) is narrower than the fingerboard. Is there an advantage to this as opposed to being equal or wider than the fingerboard width?

One reason for this is to allow less weight to the guitar but the advantage is not to make it exactly the same width as the board because of the different shrinkage rates of the top, fingerboard, and heel block.

I normally put little finish on the top just inside the fingerboard glue line to allow for some shrinkage/slipage of the board without cracking the top along the F. Board line. This way, if the finger board shrinks, the top would normally crack underneath the board, not at the edge.

So I usually make the heel block wider or narrower than the board but use the finish right inside to avoid cracking at the board line on the top.
