It's just the Marcel Proust factor there, Ed. Even Keith Floyd (the famous chef) said that sometimes he just felt like having a can of Heinz Tomato Soup or a Fray Bentos " Bake-in-the-Tin " pie...or that stuff (which totally freaks Americans out)....Bovril! (They call it "that Limey crap".. ). Actually, peasant grub can be pretty good, like Liver, or Black Pudding, or Haggis, or good old Mince and Potatoes with HP sauce and accompanied by slices of bread from a Scotch loaf etc. IMO. I stayed at a top hotel in Paris for a week, eating at their high-class restaurant each night and having lunch in the city. (on expenses of course! ). By the end of the week, having had my fill of Lobster or Medallions of Beef etc, in cream sauces and herbs, I would have given anything for some good, honest Fish and Chips with salt and vinegar! Admittedly, you Continentals are spoilt for choice! I've had some truly memorable food at some of the very cheap "family" restaurants in the residential areas of Madrid, which basically just had a very limited choice apart from the Plato Del Dia. Also very cheap wine by the carafe, that leaves £5 Supermarket wine here tasting like monkey's p1ss.. cheers, Ron
