thats C phrygian chord was a cool suprise.

When Felixs hits the G# in the intro i was tempted to play an E major, but i didnt cause i knew i would get in trouble for it .. but i think it realy stir things up
for half a sec. the singer might kick me in the groin for it but thats another story

RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (in reply to duende

Norman mentioned the E7 chord possiblilty. You wouldn't get kicked for it if done right. I would probably use an E7(b5) myself..... that is the tritone substitution for Bb7.

The chord I used there could be analyzed as an E7(#5) in first inversion. E7(#5)/G#

What ever you choose for this spot it needs to be delivered dynamically soft because Felix is winding things down there and the guitar needs to be following that contour.

Flo.

Love that cigarette smoke in the video, you couldn't have staged it better if you tried... I could swear I smell a cigarette when I watched your video.

Congratulations Henrik. Lovely toque.
Well done to everyone for such varied takes on the accompaniment,
This foro is a fantastic resource and the effort displayed by the judges in providing critical analysis has to be commended. There is wealth of information in this thread alone.
Respect to all involved
J

RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (in reply to duende

I´ve been a way for some days.

That was a cool challenge, and the best man won, no dougts. It was just a tad better. Congrats Henrik. You deserved it. I think you lay a lot better now than just a year or two ago. Especially your sound is becomming VERY good. Very flamenco.

My own performance was a bit so so, and most of the judges mentioned it. To monotounous, not playing enough with the singer. I more or less played what I would have played if I went down to the local peña and played with one of the amateur singers.
They want compás and stability and NO freaking out and funky falsetas. There´s a big difference playing with a good singer you know and a not so good one which you dont know. First of all, play safe.
I´m not saying that it should be this way, but it is. Sometimes I would like a less rigid atmosphere when it comes to accompanying cante.
I liked all the entries. Some more than others, A lot of good creative playing.

I've also just returned home after being away for a few days.

I think Ron's right.

3. Judges should send their scores to the designated “administrator” who will in turn posts them all simultaneously (to avoid one comment to affect either way the next).

Hey GJ, that's a good idea.

Sorry for the "Andy?" bit that appeared in my score for Salmonete-Bursche. Just for my own amusement, I'd guessed at some of your identities and thought that I'd deleted them all before posting. As it turns out, my guesses were wrong!

High quality entries from all of you. I could regularly make some of the same mistakes I've criticized, and some of you were doing things far better than I might on any given night.

Congratulations to everyone!!!

Flo, you kicked ass man, don't worry. You did a solid job in most judges comments- ie. Doit and Ricardo (they are great players and are often harsh judges). Jason is trying to fine tune you with steering you away from the rolling rasg but he could see the understanding of the form in your entry, and Sean obviously didn't like the rasg either. The judges said there were only small things seperating all entrants.

I wouldn't worry about the score too much, you video was good too and showed that you were really into it. Nobody thinks your submission was no good, you admitted you did not even spend too much time on it. It wouldn't be right if you casually entered and came out above everyone else.

loook i know you right....but still ...the CHORDSSS

but u right..i defenetly didnt deserve to win considering the effort ...but lol **** man...second to last behind wrong chords and missed chords and changes in a cante accomp challenge...what message is that ? play whatever as long as its not flashy...the strumming i like is more important then the right chord..jeez

but whatever i am cool not angry ..it just become funny when i was fighting with henry for second to last...no offence henry ..i love you too

Its because I took away points for suspected punch-in/editing. I took 10 points off..... Add 10 back Flo. You deserve 10 points back for the cigarette in the video. Thats your real score.

Forgive me?

RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (in reply to duende

Florian

i dont know if you are interested in thoughts? but here they are.

There were a lot of good moments in your entry, and I agree, the chords.... they need to be right.
On the other hand IMHO, you push to much. I like your rasgueados and your picado ideas, but not the way you performed them. IMO they need to be a lot quieter and in level with the singing. A lot more subtle
If you play with a good singer, one who is used to play with good cante guitarists, (and it doesnt matter if they are spanish , danish or from from timbuktu) they´ll tell you to cool down and not interfere with their singing. I know it, I´ve been there, I´ve been told. In fact, right now my own playing with singers is to conservative for my own taste, but I feel I learn a lot more playing like that.
So, IMO, a lot of good ideas, but you should adjust them to the singers performance. While they are singing they are the important ones. Thats flamenco.

RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (in reply to Florian

please let me know if this question is disrespectful or rude or somewhat rebelious

No way... You've got every right to ask for explanations. My criticism was based on my preferences, and I think I'm a very harsh judge in that sense. For example, what I said about Perca-Anders (and others) anticipating the rhythm amounts to an extremely small amount of time, a fraction of a second, but I've heard that kind of thing many times and am sensitive to it.

So, when I listen to anyone accompany, there are lots of "mistakes" that I don't mind hearing, but overshadowing the singer ruins it for me. That doesn't necessarily have anything to do with modern vs. old, because guitarists have been overshadowing singers for a long time (for example, Ramón Montoya's accompaniment of Aurelio or Mojama in 1929). Good guitarists are always looking for "clever solutions," and it's not something that Paco de Lucía started doing. As a guitarist I like clever ideas, but as a cante enthusiast I'm very tired of hearing them happen during the singing. Cante is more than just the voice and the guitar, because there's a third element, which is the verse. When I'm listening to cante (not accompanying), I pay much more attention to the guitar and voice, but I know Spaniards who focus on the letra more than anything
else. It's logical, because most people don't have technical knowledge about melody, harmony or rhythm but they can understand the story being told. For these people, the technical aspects of music are in the background, and it's the other way around for people who are more interested in the technical aspects of the music (for whatever reason).

quote:

...i see it as something you do togheder

Me too, but we define "together" differently. Looks like we spell it differently, too. JUST KIDDING! The problem for me were the big rasgueados during the singing. Using the terms mentioned in my post, the things that I didn't like were "projection and juxtaposition" and "empathic dynamics (flowing with singer)."

Projection: Those rasgueados were too loud.

Juxtaposition: They shouldn't have happened at the same time as the singing or should have been MUCH softer.

Empathic dynamics: Notice that the word I've chosen is "empathic" and not "emphatic." According to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, empathy means "the ability to share someone else's feelings or experiences by imagining what it would be like to be in their situation." The big rasgueados were imitating what Félix was doing, and that's fine for a side-by-side presentation of guitar and voice, but I greatly prefer to hear the guitar under the voice.

But I think some people prefer to hear guitar and voice on equal terms, and that's why I said that your accompaniment might go over very well in some parts of Spain. The picado wasn't bad (technique could have been a bit cleaner, but that's not so important), but after hearing the big rasgueado, I was not looking forward to hearing another "big guitar moment."

If it helps, you should know that I don't like 80 to 90 percent of the accompaniment that I hear nowadays, so maybe it could be said that I'm not a fair judge. And in all honesty, I liked a lot of what you did, and the things I didn't like weren't nearly as bad as, say, the overuse of major seventh chords, which is something that I absolutely hate. But I prefer the approach of Melchor and Juan Carmona (there are modern players, too) for reasons that I've already mentioned.

Aire is hard to develop because its main ingredient is the passing of time. You can't really "put your finger on it," so to speak.
