Finishing maple back and sides

Do any of you guys have experience of finishing maple back and sides?

1. Was there any need to fill the pores?

2. Did you treat the wood with BLO before polishing?
If so did this cause any discolouring of the maple...
...and how long does it take to cure...
...and were there any problems with applying a shellac finish on top?

No need for pore filling but you will need to fill the rosewood bindings

Hey peter just finishing a flamed maple guitar. all i did was make sure any rosewood was sealed with shellac b4 hitting the maple. get a scrap cloth and wipe off any of the rosewood bleed from your rubber. Then polish away i find no por filling on the biding are usually required as i like to use a bit of pumice earlier on in the polishing to flatten things out.

Hi Steve,

I was wanting to apply linseed oil before polishing to pop out the figure of the maple - I've seen this before but not with a shellac finish - I'm a bit concerned I may get a bit of milkyness?

I'm also tempted just to oil the back and sides and leave a matt finish - that should be enough to protect against normal playing. I'm a bit concerned about burning the house down...

I bought this wood a couple of years ago from the guy in Turkey who was referenced in one of the other threads (Akustic wood) - I also got some cypress, all was good quality but much less expensive than other suppliers.

I have tried to email akustic wood a few times with no luck they just wont get back to me. im tempted to go down to the local kebab house and ask them if the can phone them for me. haha

i personally wouldnt have thought shellac would stick to linseed oil
