OK Folks,

Well, Doit obviously has not trained hard enough for my Geographical challenge.

So I'll lay it open to ANY member willing to cast an educated guess as to what the two photographs depict.

Open to all NON UK Residents or NON UK Passport Holders only!!

No Googling or cheating now!

cheers,

Ron

Ok,

But what about the first?

Alright, I'm pretty sure the first one is in a coastal town that starts with a B. So, Brighton Tower, Blackpool Tower, Blackburn?

I dunno. We had a revolution a couple centuries back so I wouldn't have to know this kind of stuff..........

OK Adam...well done! (I don't really know if they accept the best of 3 answers on "University Challenge" though! )

Very good for someone outside the UK though!

Yes, the famous Blackpool Tower in the NW of England (up the road a bit from Liverpool and Manchester).

Probably every UK member here over the age of 40 has been to the top at some point in their childhood.

Ah...Blackpool....the British Disneyland ...(without the weather or the attractions) !!

10 points

cheers,

Ron

Hmm...

No idea what or where the first picture is, but I get the feeling it's Central European, (maybe Germany?).

I had another look at the photograph, this time with a magnifying glass (I've really got to get a bigger screen) and discovered that the folk in the centre of the picture are actually pushing bicycles and NOT walking pet goats, as I first thought!

This is very disappointing and I will now have to cross this off my "must see" list of destinations.

Once I find out the location, I intend writing a strong letter of complaint to the Mayor or Local Authority for this odious attempt to boost local Tourism by means of misleading photography!

I'll take a guess and say Munich?

cheers,

Ron

o-k- first clue: not in Germany (that'd be too easy, given that I live there)...

Ten “points”!?! I thought I was getting a year’s worth of Sedlak lessons. I want my three dollars back!

Never been an anglophile myself, per se, but I’ve known a lot of limey-lovers and expatriates over the years, and met a lot of folks in bands from the U.K., touring over here throughout the 90s. So I guess I’ve absorbed a higher than average degree of British cultural references….

The British seaside resort town thing has always fascinated me, It just seems so…..dour, and kind of like a parody of a vacation spot rather than the real thing (taking that parody to an extreme gets me thinking about the “funfair” episode of Father Ted). No offense intended to anyone with fond memories of such places ....

Wow, all great context, Val. I love learning about this kind of stuff. Didn’t know about the forced closure of the factories, and the locking people out of the boarding houses thing is crazy! I didn’t realize it was that grim.

That all tracks with my own idea about northern Europeans being a bit tougher and less spoiled than Americans in regards to leisure time- the idea of plunking one’s self down on some frigid, rocky beach and LIKING IT, GODDAMMIT, ‘cause it’s the only game in town…..
