so heres the thing: my guitar sucks. and I don't mean just any ordinary sucks, I mean really sucks, like I want to throw it in a river and be rid of it.
Ibanez Ga6CE (my other guitar is a custom shop strat lol, and soon I have a salvador castillo coming )
So, a month or two ago, since I had nothing to lose =) I decided to start removing polyurethane off the top to see if i could get some sounds comin out of it. Lo and behold, after three hours of 60 grit on an orbital sander, the top which was advertised "solid spruce" turns out to be plywood...
Then I gutted the electronics, took care to chisel out some of the bridge wood so the strings dont rest on it behind the saddle. made it into a 12 hole. and tung oiled the whole lot
also shaved the neck.
here are some pics of the haggard beast lol.

where the pre amp was. I prefer to think of it as a tone port lol. It actually does make it sound bassier, and alot brighter. i actually enjoy being able to hear more of what i play. so i'd say this was a definite positive find

here's the neck, shaving of the poly was like shaving Zakk Wylde lol. I literally went through three pieces of 60 grit with the orbital, then i switched to a sharpened scraper, and eventually a dreml with a grinder wheel lol. and then i had to make it smooth lol

notice the circular burnout from the sander going thru the first ply lol. the top on this thing is way thick, unfortunately the first ply is about the thickness of two sheets of ****ty paper.

Man... All the Luthiers here will be recoiling in horror... By the way, that rectangular hole where the electronics was removed from could maybe be described as a "sound port" for eBay purposes..
cheers,
Ron

just a 67 conde? what you think im some kinda dish-ragwhore lol?
Val, a pre-amp is what's used to take the signal from the pickup under the saddle and turn it into a signal that is strong enough to travel the cable to an amp. I talso adds options like equalizaton. but mainly it takes up space, eats batteries, doesn't work well, and adds wgith to a guitar lol.
but vaaaaaal, you always play the downtrodden underappreciated unanswered-post foro member! lol jk
Nah i didn't really think you didnt know, i just thought it might be an educational opportunity for anyone out there (i'm pretty sure only about 20 people read the forum lol) who didnt know what it was for... like say... a dead bear, or... borat, or....random n00b. lol
