Yeah, its maybe not as funny when translated (and some of the things might be considered a bit rude as well) But he basically said that you cant use the word flamenco so casual and the guy hasnt got a friggin clue and should get a good beating he has no dignity etc

nah , it was pretty funny [:D]

I always tryed to keep a open mind about anyone i was even trying to defend him if u remember [:)] but when i saw Otmars notes and how arrogant he was when that guy asked him a question about bulerias , forghet it[:)]

sonikete -> RE: Flamenco teacher on your tube? (Dec. 24 2006 22:07:27)

The thing is that ottmar is a friggin a-hole, i thought he had a bit more respect but after surfing around on his site, i seen that he says things that gives the impression that people into real flamenco only plays old stuff from records and that flamenco basically is dead and he has rejuvenated it and people should be grateful to him.

Ignorance is bliss :)

The blind leading the blind also comes to mind.

What can you expect for free?

Francisco -> RE: Flamenco teacher on your tube? (Dec. 25 2006 1:45:03)

Holy cow, there's a stranger. Welcome back, Tom.

Nice to read your name again Tomas.

Btw, there is a lot of free useful stuff on youtube.

" And just twirl your fingers around like this to create that spanish effect "

[:D]

ok i admit , i didnt watch it again , just did it from memory today but he did say something to that effect [:D][:D]

PacoPaella -> RE: Flamenco teacher on your tube? (Dec. 25 2006 23:53:24)

This sure is a bad video in terms of explaining flamenco technique, however this guy spent a lot of time recording it and making it available for free, so i think its a bit cheap to sit in the first row and boo at him. I'd like to see better teaching material from only half of the people who complain about him here...teaching material, not super duper hyper difficult showoff stuff recorded and cut together in countless sessions [;)]

Seriously you dotn have to like it but i am sure it brings total beginners, Country / folk guitarists and the likes a step closer to flamenco. Once they become curious they can still look for better material.

Yeah, cut that sh!t out you guys. God i hate that![8D]

Francisco -> RE: Flamenco teacher on your tube? (Dec. 26 2006 1:20:47)

Paco makes a valid point, it's a good idea to give credit where it is due. The video was clear, and audio was decent. Not a bad video for an audience with less flamenco knowledge than is apparently present on this forum. This knowledge is why alot of us are here, but it can be a double edged sword, tho, so, you (me...I) better practice!

Patrick -> RE: Flamenco teacher on your tube? (Dec. 26 2006 2:07:27)

I think you guys are missing the point. The guy is totally clueless as to what flamenco is or how to play it.

Francisco -> RE: Flamenco teacher on your tube? (Dec. 26 2006 2:09:04)

I know, I was just trying to be nice....Christmas and all![:D]

i have a friend who made his money as a student with playing guitar and singing along in pubs (and not half bad). Whenever we meet he tells me "hey lets play a flamenco together!" and then he plays sort of bossa/rumba over Am/G/F/E - he simply thinks that IS all flamenco is abuot. Just like this guy who obviously never got initiated by a knowing person. HOWEVER, he does try to help, he invested work, he certainly does no harm. I think its just poor to criticise him unless you have something better online. And i mean an attempt to teach people, not to show how brilliant you are or how good and affordable your lessons are.

You know how i got to this board? Some guy on mundo-flamenco forum linked here, to a video of toddK and talked similiary about his style/technique. I found that disgusting. Do it better or shut up ; in fact, even if you do it better, still shut up. This isnt olympic competition, its music for gods sake. Why do people put most of their time effort and energy into putting other peoples music down, instead of showing some respect? [:'(]

OK, had to say that. Now happy holidays to everyone [:D]

I appreciate your compassion and your generosity but I think he does harm even if it is not his purpose. I think that when you want to teach you have to know what you are speaking of...In faft I do not mind the video of that guy, anybody can show anything, that is the freedom of the net, what is revolting are all the guys who thank him and who are abused by an ignorant. I hope that some of that guys are reading that post.
I am 50 and I made a lot of efforts since 30 years to learn flamenco and I am still learning. I met people who pretented to play flamenco, who pretented to teach dance, guitar and who took the place of others with true knowledge. So Paco, if you really respect flamenco as an art, do not think he does no harm.
Showing something you does, great, but pretend to teach something you ignore, no, thanks. The pity is that he does not know that he does not know, and he really wants to help people...

Florian -> RE: Flamenco teacher on your tube? (Dec. 26 2006 10:30:24)

Yes PacoPaella u right, I just wanna say all this other people here are bad not me[:)][:)]
I did say its a shame he dosent understand even the smallest basic things about flamenco or what it is because he speaks clearly and hes good at explaining.

he should have said "spanish sounding guitar", i mean the kind of spanish u hear in western pop songs then there would have been no confusion.

Hi Florian
I appreciate you humour and you are definitly right.
If the video was: "how to introduce a spanish flavour in western pop song", I would have not said anything. So, the product is not so bad, just the name written on it...
Happy new year

Everyone knows i am as open minded as the next guy, infact i was defending Otmar 3 days ago but...

in today world only takes 1 minute to google everything, wouldnt have been hard to put flamenco in google.

I mean i am no einstein but if i am gonna make a instructional video about "How to please a woman" i will atlst use the internet to look at one [:)]

Ricardo -> RE: Flamenco teacher on your tube? (Dec. 28 2006 0:44:43)

This brings me back to a point I made a while back. Not to be in total agreement with PacoPaella, but I don't blame the guy for teaching what he knows. Once again I feel this is good example why so much about learning is riding on the STUDENT more than the teacher. If this guy was MY teacher, I would say, "sorry, this is NOT what I am looking for". But still perhaps SOMETHING can be gained. But for the folks "learning" this, it is up to THEM to investigate furthur what flamenco is. It is not like they have to look far on youtube.[8|]

Ricardo
