Hello, I'm Teo and I'm a 22 year old guitarist from Croatia. I've been playing for flamenco for around 5 and a half years and I look forward to posting here!
Here's me trying out a song by Serbian artist Adil which has a flamenco solo live:
Welcome friend! 1st Croatian member? Thanks for sharing your playing!
How's the flamenco scene in Croatia? I am travelling to Croatia in June for the 1st time. Not for flamenco, but family holiday.

Welcome to the Foro, Teo. Nice picado and ligado!

I might just be the 1st Croatian member, but I don't know haha :D
The flamenco scene here is almost non-existent, except for a few people, and they're not unlike some cryptid creature; your musician friend swears they've come across one on accident in some coastal town or island and they played something otherworldly haha.
But there's a few prominent aficionados, Teo Mandžuka being one of them, he's a guitarist from Rijeka. Nina Ćorić is a singer and organizer of most flamenco events in Croatia (we have international events here and there) and that's about it. I try to be more public with my instagram/facebook and I've just started posting on youtube for the first time in a long while.

Awesome, Paco Castillo guitars are worth way more than their market price tbh. Mine already came with a pretty nice setup but I might lower the action just a bit more

Thank you :) I mostly use ami picado, had a nasty injury on my i finger so it's hard to do 2 finger stuff

The cryptid comment might've been too vague; so maybe if I re-tell a story one singer-songwriter once told me it'll clear up;
He (the singer-songwriter in question, plays a nylon-string) was playing on the street once, when an innocuous older guy comes across him and asks to see the guitar he's playing, to maybe try it out. The older gentleman then proceeds to play something so mind-blowing the singer can't even try to put into words what he saw or heard, after which the older guy tells him he was PdL's student and leaves with little to no explanation.
I've also heard of an older gentleman on the island of Korčula playing both PdL and JohnMclaughlin compositions (so both a finger and a pick player).
The way they show up out of nowhere, the way my musician friends describe them, it's almost like they're some sort of unicorn hahahaha, but I've never seen anyone too impressive personally, though I have not come across the previously mentioned players.

"Cryptic" is the word. Paco De Lucía had NO pupils, including his own nephews that joined him on stage. Of course he gave advices but was not a "teacher" as were other maestros such as Manolo Sanlucar or Gerardo Nuñez. People claiming to be his students? "cryptic" indeed. [:D]
TeoFlamenco2 -> RE: Just joined (Apr. 28 2025 20:41:48)
Yep, I really don't buy any of the people that claim to be his students Same with the one that shall not be named (I might've just joined the forum, but I've known about it for years and I remember the old posts)

Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
CRYPTID
noun
cryp·tid ˈkrip-təd plural cryptids
: an animal (such as Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster) that has been claimed to exist but never proven to exist

So I should've either said cryptic creature or cryptid, haha But yeah you'll occasionally hear some story/legend about a superb flamenco player and you dont know whether to believe it or not

Honestly I enjoyed mine, but it did not sound like a traditional flamenco guitar... but still a fun instrument to play!
Manitas de Lata -> RE: Just joined (May 1 2025 13:11:24)
sounds more a White Ebo. guitar?
my view on those guitars , is that the ones with maple (?) fingerboard sounds very similar , maybe too bright. ones with rosewood (?) dark wood finger. sounds way better.
I think the guy allways said that they werent traditional type.

Jose Carlos Gomez was PDL‘s student. Paco said it in his documentary. Jose studied from Paco and Paco's father[:)]

Paco said it in his documentary.
which documentary was that and what time roughly did he state this?
My conclusion is based on discussions of this with a student (Paco de Malaga) of both Paco's father and Ramon (older brother), Ramon remaining a close friend to this gentleman, and this was discussed between them and the truth was that as of 2008 or so, Paco NEVER had any pupil of any kind whatsoever (and this might have been confirmed after Ramon passed as well, as this student also remained in contact with Paco). Bottom line was this gentleman, being so close to the family would have LOVED to not only have a pointer or two from Paco himself, but would have proudly declared himself a student....and he felt strongly NOBODY has a right to this claim.
In this interview Jose claims at age 7 he studied with some singer guitarist in Algeciras, and this family Marin that he knew, also knew Valderrama and Ramon, and so Paco family would go fiesta with these folks cuz they liked the fish, and Paco's sister sang in the juerga. He does not admit there any classes with Paco's dad nor Paco neither.
around 15 min he relates a story of Potito early recording (Jose is 17) and Paco liked his guitar and used to to record something there.
Mark2 -> RE: Just joined (May 2 2025 17:26:32)
In Paco Sevilla's latest book, he wrote that George Peacock took lessons from both Paco and Ramon. George later moved to San Francisco and opened a small music store. He also built guitars. I had several interactions with him and he never mentioned playing flamenco. If I'd had lessons with Paco when he was a very young man, I might have hung it up too :-)

the bad news is you can't impress anybody by playing like Paco. The good news is you can impress everybody by saying you learnt from Paco. lol
TeoFlamenco2 -> RE: Just joined (May 2 2025 18:07:07)
I think it's more of a guitar-history nerd thing. We hear a lot of good players nowadays thanks to social media so we're used to hearing crazy stuff being played, but there aren't many people who've had very personal interactions with figures like Paco, so that's a rarity today.
