Here is an interview where Gallardo explains how he was “auditioned” and then chosen to teach Paco the concerto note by note. At 32:00



I like that he conducted the first performances in Japan and Paco did not know where the rehearsal numbers etc are, so He had to show paco where they were starting in the middle etc., by having his own guitar handy.
