ORIGINAL: Ricardo quote:
ever been in a recording studio? What is on those walls? Yes they WANT your guitar to sound "dull". [:D][:D] When I bought my first guitar in Paracho, Mexico in 1957 I noticed that some sellers were going for the opposite effect. Since I knew nothing about guitars, my friends had given me two pieces of advice. Deal with Ramon Zalapa, and pick the loudest one. Zalapa sold guitars, office furniture and paint. His showroom was fairly large and contained all three. The whole main street of Paracho is lined with guitar stores and workshops. I checked out Zalapa's, then went up and down the Avenida Independencia, pricing and trying guitars. In a few places the instruments sounded better to me, but prices were higher. Eventually the penny dropped. In the more expensive places you were led into a fairly small room to try out instruments. Invariably the floors were stone, tile or terrazo, the walls and ceiling were plaster. Reverberation made the guitars sound better. I took my friends' advice and bought a guitar from Zalapa. Comparing it to other El Cheapos when I got back home, I concluded that my friends were right. RNJ
