What do you guys think of this? and generally what yerai cortes does if you wanna tak about that?

I often complain about a cheesy flamenco video. but he certainly breaks that mold. still not sure im keen on the video but different!
He also seems to be a young guitarist thats pushing some boundaries and just expressing his artistic preferences.

Still cant embed video!!!! Sorry

Norman Paul Kliman -> RE: yerai cortes (May 26 2024 11:40:16)

I say way cool. Not sure how many times I’d like to listen/watch, but very cool on first viewing. I like the guitar playing, the arrangement and the weirdness of the video. Reminds me of St. Vincent.

One thing, though: The women all seem so pissed off and unfriendly. Kinda scary.

As said when I previously posted that video in the 'this week's flamenco guitar videos' thread, it seems he is trying to reach outside the flamenco audience. See also that yesterday COLORS chanel released a video of him:

But he has also put out his share of cheesy pop music/videos. You could argue this is knowing kitsch, rather than Antonio Rey's sincere and cheesy videos.
e.g.

Hey sorry man. I have a habit of only ever checking the general and luthier forums. Sorry for the double post.

I agree with your thoughts. It does feel aware. That thumbnail worth the checkered jacket had a wes Anderson feel .

Ricardo -> RE: yerai cortes (May 26 2024 14:26:19)

As I said before… he is great and unique with his compás expressions and twisting the normal phrases into interesting pretzels for the ear. But I am getting annoyed with the run on sentences. The impact for me would hit harder of the concept if he simply would “rematar” on occasion. It is punctuation that comes from the traditional cante, and it translates beautifully to instrumental variations, regardless if some snob don’t accept guitar soloing of any value other than short bits between letras.

So I am concerned both with this falsetas between letras and the long solos. My nick name for him is “Yerai? No hay…..”, and you don’t finish it. How about “Yerai, no hay….Córtes” …you know instead of “Cortés”?

Stu -> RE: yerai cortes (May 26 2024 18:27:44)

Oh yeah a recall you saying such things before but wasn't quite sure of examples. But know I get it. I think I feel the same.

I love some of his stuff but I'm not sure I like the performance art side of this stuff almost like parody of itself.

Manitas de Lata -> RE: yerai cortes (May 26 2024 22:04:52)

guy is great , hes doing his stuff , i dont like the pop songs with other guys , rather i really enjoy his very unique stuff like his solos.

hard to create nowadays (or ever lol) , love also his factory Sanchis with factory rosete , sounds the standard for "modern" flamenco

JasonM -> RE: yerai cortes (May 27 2024 14:17:49)

Ala Stanley Kubrick?? …Definitely broke the cheese mold!

Yerai is definitely amazing. I Hope he continues to evolve from a musicality/composition standpoint though

bahen -> RE: yerai cortes (May 28 2024 17:43:02)

WOW. Very impressive, as always.

devilhand -> RE: yerai cortes (May 29 2024 17:44:06)

The man is a phenomenon. He plays both flamenco and steel string guitar. He accompanies flamenco cante, baile and pop songs. He plays piano as well.
The first time I've seen a flamenco guitarist play a steel string with a pick and piano.

bahen -> RE: yerai cortes (Jun. 9 2024 14:37:28)

Yerai's compositions are becoming quite popular, too. (Or at least, what I think are his compositions?) At the flamenco festival in London this week, bits of his Jaleos (the one on Solera Flamenca, but now also in the Colours Romance, both linked earlier in this thread) were performed by at least two performers.

Stu -> RE: yerai cortes (Jun. 9 2024 17:03:27)

I think the reason they were played in that gig was because he's usually the principle guitarist for rocio in that show. He was billed as being there so maybe had to withdraw last minute?

Anyway I guess they are his compositions as he put that show together with her

devilhand -> RE: yerai cortes (Jun. 12 2024 22:23:57)

A slightly different version of Sonar por Bulerias. A joy to listen to his Bulerias. What is he wearing on his hand?

Ricardo -> RE: yerai cortes (Jun. 13 2024 15:31:03)

It’s a rubber band in order to train his picados to go faster.

It’s gold jewelry for cryin out loud.

AndresK -> RE: yerai cortes (Jun. 13 2024 19:20:05)

At 1:15 and on he also mentions that the music of Paco, Tomatito and Vicente sounded "old" to him when listened to it when he was young.[:D] We are all practically too old now it seems[:(]

rombsix -> RE: yerai cortes (Jul. 4 2024 23:06:04)

He's wearing a spacesuit this time.

WTF. He is starting to get on my nerves now. [:D]

Nice find, I couldn't resist but transcribe it :D

devilhand -> RE: yerai cortes (Jul. 8 2024 21:26:46)

I like Yerai's Sonar por Bulerias. At 0:48-1:05 you hear flamenco guitar imitating the cante.
That's something I've never heard before in flamenco music.

What a zoomer! And yet he's trying to sound like Mario Escudero in a space suit!

JasonM -> RE: yerai cortes (Jul. 15 2024 21:25:29)

And maybe he drew inspiration from this …

Ricardo -> RE: yerai cortes (Jul. 16 2024 17:53:19)

At least Gilbert does a nice remate or two.

A new song produced by Yerai Cortes?

Ricardo -> RE: yerai cortes (Jul. 23 2024 16:13:12)

It is too long and boring. Perhaps he could shorten it and make it go faster.

ernandez R -> RE: yerai cortes (Jul. 24 2024 2:45:31)

It's a 1 minute teaser. Can't wait for the full length version.
